From NENA President Rob McMullen, ENP:

Like you, NENA is disappointed by today’s decision from the Office of Management and Budget not to reclassify "Public Safety Telecommunicators" into the "Protective Service" category. Although we recognize this has become an emotionally-charged issue for many, NENA has provided substantive, evidence-based comments and advocacy, consistent with OMB’s data-driven approach to this statistical classification. OMB has made it clear that this is the only way to achieve our long-term goal of full reclassification. We hold out hope that future reclassification efforts across the public safety community will adopt an approach that is likewise aligned with the SOCPC / OMB data requirements. Despite today’s setback, NENA will continue to advocate for an accurate statistical classification for 9-1-1 professionals to support critical research into the mental and physical impacts of 9-1-1 jobs, which differ substantially from those encountered by other non-public-safety "dispatcher" professions.

Congratulations to the sixty-eight(!!!!) 9-1-1 professionals who passed the fall 2017 ENP exam and are now certified Emergency Number Professionals! Well done! For more information on how you too can achieve this prestigious professional designation, visit the ENP webpage.

With NENA’s NG9-1-1 Standards and Best Practices Conference (SBP) coming up in less than two months, we look forward to seeing you in Florida for an exciting and important event that not only advances critical NG9-1-1 operations and technical standards work, but also benefits you as a 9-1-1 professional, your agency or company, and the entire 9-1-1 industry.

At SBP, you will join with your emergency communications peers to discuss and address the issues, concerns, and challenges that face 9-1-1. You will share your ideas, insights, experiences, and expertise to shape the future of 9-1-1 and help make nationwide NG9-1-1 a reality. Only your involvement will carry us over the NG9-1-1 finish line.

Like few other industries, 9-1-1 is a community of constant evolution. At SBP you have the unique opportunity to bring new ideas, new issues, and new solutions into the standards development process. This is not just a conference — this is an experience. And that experience is better off with your participation. In short, we need your knowledge and input to make a great event and to make 9-1-1 all that it can and should be.

We’re excited for you to join us at SBP where you can grow professionally, help to make our industry better, and lead us into the next generation.

For the first time, NENA is included in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), the official workplace-giving campaign for federal and military employees.

Federal employees can support NENA @ Combined Federal Campaign code #45316.

Now through January 12, federal employees and retirees can support education and training opportunities for members of our 9-1-1 community who wouldn’t otherwise have them. With the funds raised by tapping into this powerful network of more than 12 million federal employees, NENA will fund more scholarships and wellness programs for 9-1-1 professionals across the country.

Through the CFC, military service members, federal employees and retirees can make automated tax-deductible gifts with weekly, monthly, or bi-monthly payroll deductions.

Please share this news with your family members, friends, and colleagues, especially those who may be, or may know, federal employees. Please forward this news item, post it on a bulletin board, or help us spread the word on Facebook and Twitter.

NENA is issuing a challenge to each chapter to increase the number of ENPs in the state (or province) between now and this coming June! The two winning chapters will each receive one free ENP Application (valued at $420) for either the Winter 2019 or Spring 2019 exam window. Here’s how it works:

  • Each newly-certified ENP during the Fall '17, Winter '18, and Spring '18 exam periods will be counted toward the chapter total.
  • The chapter with the most new ENPs and the chapter that has the highest proportional increase in ENPs will each win.
  • Winners will be announced at the NENA 2018 Conference & Expo in June.
Now it's time to get out there and start promoting the ENP Certification Program! Good luck!

Document Announcements
The NENA Call Blocking Information Document provides guidance to PSAP administrators regarding what conditions should be used for a PSAP to identify a calling number or identifier as a problem source and explains how to develop a draft policy for having that source blocked or disposed of until the issue from that source has been resolved. This document also provides guidance on how to determine if the problem is resolved and the criteria to un-block the number or calling source.

The NENA Standard Data Formats for E9-1-1 Data Exchange & GIS Mapping standard sets forth NENA standard formats for Automatic Location Identification (ALI) data exchange between Service Providers and Data Base Management System Providers, a GIS data model, a Data Dictionary, and formats for data exchange between the ALI Database and PSAP Controller equipment. The reason for revising this document in 2017 is to add additional legacy Classes of Service (CoS), standardized use of Service Descriptions in the Customer Name/Service field, and specify the recommended CoS information in Section 19 and the recommended Service Descriptions in Section 20.

See the full document and click here for comment submission instructions. All comments are due by midnight Eastern on December 22, 2017. Contact the NENA Committee Resource Manager with any questions or concerns.

Having adjudicated all comments, the subject document is now considered "stable." Per NENA IPR, Section 4.5 a "Stable Form Notice" is being issued and can be seen by clicking below.
