Please join NENA in taking a moment today to remember the public safety heroes and the thousands of others who lost their lives during the tragic events of September 11, 2001. To honor their memories, let us all hold dearly our freedoms and celebrate the service NENA members and all other first responders provide each day.

It is an interactive, informative, attendee-driven event where you not only learn about the standards that are spurring the development and implementation of NG9-1-1 technology and operations best practices, but also create the guidelines, resources, and documents that enable NG services, systems, and PSAPs to reach their full potential. Join us in Orlando from January 15-18 and be part of the solution! With your peers from across the 9-1-1 universe, you’ll discuss and work to address the most pressing NG-related issues, including: GIS and NG-data needs; location services and accuracy; resiliency and interoperability; governance and funding; telecommunicator SOPs; procurement and transition planning; security and resiliency; apps and the Internet of Things; multimedia messaging and accessibility; hiring and training; and the evolution of 9-1-1 center supervision and management. Washington Briefing
There is a growing need for local authorities to understand the difference between NG9-1-1 and FirstNet as decisions are made about the future of emergency communications. The National 911 Program recently partnered with the National Association of State 911 Administrators (NASNA) to create a resource to help state and local authorities understand how Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) and the Nationwide Public Safety Broadband Network, known as FirstNet, are similar, different and how they can work together to improve emergency communication. The short, visual report shares critical information about the efforts to implement NG9-1-1 at the local and state level, and coordinate with FirstNet at the national level. Volunteers Wanted
The NENA Data Structures Committee seeks volunteers for the development of a white paper that explores Representational State Transfer (REST) and JavaScript Object Notation (JSON). The white paper will be delivered to the NENA Development Steering Council and NENA staff to aid in their decision to adopt JSON as the format for NG9-1-1 data elements (instead of XML), and REST for NG9-1-1 web services (instead of SOAP). The white paper will list advantages and disadvantages of the proposed changes, any issues with NIEM conformance, and recommendations regarding whether or not to adopt JSON and REST. If adoption of JSON and REST is recommended, the white paper will recommend a migration plan. The workgroup will particularly benefit from those with knowledge of, and experience working with, XML, JSON, REST, SOAP, and NIEM-conformant data schemas. Weekly calls will be held on Mondays from 12PM – 1PM Eastern. Click here to join the workgroup. A new working group focused on the Internet of Things (IoT) and external applications (apps) is seeking volunteers to assist in creating a document describing the impact of IoT devices and emergency applications on NG9-1-1. This document will provide guidance to 9-1-1 professionals, application/device vendors, and data management/monitoring entities for NENA-endorsed methodology for NG9-1-1 interaction by IoT devices and emergency calling applications. The working group may also determine mechanisms by which attachments (such as images or videos) are either conveyed with or made available within a 9-1-1 call and determine how data provided by applications or devices is made available to and accessed by call takers and responders. Additionally, the group may determine mechanisms (signaling etc.) by which applications and devices place automatic or manual 9-1-1 calls, including situations where the person initiating the call is remote, or gets bridged into a 9-1-1 call. Click here to join this working group.
