Rapidly advancing technologies promise to revolutionize our 9-1-1 system, creating an urgent need for 9-1-1 professionals to be equipped with greater knowledge and enhanced skills. Unfortunately, most 9-1-1 centers simply do not have the resources necessary to meet this need.

This is where you come in. We are trying to raise $50,000 – enough to provide dozens of scholarships for 9-1-1 professionals who want to meet the challenges of the future head-on and provide the public with the best 9-1-1 service possible.

Will you help us reach that goal? We can only get there together.

If everyone in our NENA family contributes $10 or more, we will hit our target! We appreciate any gift and truly believe no amount is too small. It is only through your support that we can make a difference. Your generosity will give you the satisfaction of knowing that you have made vital training opportunities available to members of our 9-1-1 community who wouldn’t otherwise have them.

Thank you for considering us this holiday season. We wish you a healthy and happy new year!

With a new administration and new Congress taking office in January, the 2017 edition of 9-1-1 Goes to Washington (Feb 26 - March 1) offers you a unique opportunity to make public safety a priority for our elected and appointed officials. GTW is an interactive forum where you learn about and discuss national 9-1-1 issues and advance those issues on Capitol Hill. This dynamic, hands-on program provides you with increased knowledge of 9-1-1 and homeland security legislative and regulatory topics, as well as critical information on the federal government process and how to work with federal policy makers. It is vital, now more than ever, that 9-1-1 professionals become active participants in the governmental process to advance the goals of our profession and industry.

 Top Five Reasons to Attend

  1. Be a participant, not a spectator! Attending GTW is a great way to advocate for the national 9-1-1 agenda and let Congress hear the "Voice of 9-1-1."
  2. Hear from nationally elected Members of Congress, the leadership of the Congressional NextGen 9-1-1 Caucus, and federal policy leaders from the FCC, the National 911 Program Office, and other agencies.
  3. Participate in informative panel sessions on the nation's pressing 9-1-1 regulatory and legislative issues and other federal government activities impacting emergency communications.
  4. Learn and share information on emerging 9-1-1 issues with national policy leaders and 9-1-1 professionals from across the country.
  5. March the Halls of Congress with fellow 9-1-1 leaders to advance a national 9-1-1 agenda and to promote pressing local and state issues from your area.
  6. **BONUS REASON TO ATTEND** Enjoy the myriad sights and activities of Washington, DC!

The NG9-1-1 Institute is hosting the 14th Annual NG9-1-1 Honor Awards Reception where heroes and leaders in the 9-1-1 field will be honored. The Co-Chairs of the Congressional NG9-1-1 Caucus and other Members of Congress are invited to attend and to present the awards.

We need your help in identifying the heroes and leaders that should be honored this year. Examples of heroism and leadership that occurred anytime between November 1, 2015 and December 31, 2016 will be considered for the awards presented at the reception.

Washington Briefing

The National Association of State 911 Administrators (NASNA) has released a paper outlining the challenges states face in optimizing revenue from the existing telephone surcharge model for funding 911, and recommending solutions. The paper is intended to be used as a companion to the white paper released in September 2015 entitled, "Four Potential Sustainable Funding Models for NG911." You can download the new paper here. The original paper may also be found using that link.

"It is important that states make every effort to optimize revenues from the current funding mechanism before attempting to implement a new one," said Harriet Miller-Brown, NASNA’s president.

Member Spotlight

Email NENA Member Services Director Bri Robinson if we should feature you or someone you know.

NENA: Tell us a little bit about who you are, where you’re from, what you do, and your history with NENA....

Rea Washington: Ask any military brat where they are from and we’re usually stumped on how to exactly answer that question. I grew up living in various places around the world following my father from Army base to Army base until he retired. I currently reside in Arkansas and work for the Ark-Tex Council of Governments as the 9-1-1 Operations Coordinator where I aid in all phases of 9-1-1 program implementation, maintenance and overall coordination for a nine county region.

I became a member of NENA in 2012 to learn more about the 9-1-1 industry and the future of Emergency Communications and was immediately impressed with the leadership, support and resources the association offers to its members. I’ve attended the last two NENA Development Conferences and several state and national NENA Conferences. I also contribute by volunteering and participating in NENA work groups.

NENA: What does 9-1-1 mean to you?

RW: If I would have been asked this question just 10 years ago I would’ve said, "9-1-1 is the number to dial when you need help!" Now it means so much more; 9-1-1 is every single network and its components and every single role that is dedicated to ensuring that the call for help is answered.
