National Database of 2017 State 9-1-1 Legislation Now Available
State legislatures work regularly to enhance emergency communication, identifying opportunities and passing a variety of important laws to improve emergency services nationwide.
The National 911 Program and the National Conference of State Legislatures are pleased to make available online summaries of 9-1-1-related state legislation enacted during 2017, including:
- Both Maine and Utah now require direct dialing to 9-1-1 from a multi-line telephone system. This bill is known as Kari's Law.
- Utah and Connecticut deem false reporting to an emergency response service a felony and punishable as a criminal offense.
- Utah, New Mexico, and Iowa modified definitions relating to 9-1-1, such as 9-1-1 service area, service plan, NG9-1-1 service providers and surcharges.
The user-friendly database provides several searchable filters to quickly find a bill. Users can search by state, topic, keyword, year, status, and bill number. The database is updated bi-weekly. Topics include:
