NENA President Seeks Member Input on Time Limits for National Executive Board Service

NENA President, Renee Hardwick, is interested in the membership’s opinion on the issue of placing limits on the number of years an individual can serve on the NENA national executive board.  Please note that the outcome of any potential national action on this issue will NOT affect the rules established by chapters regarding service on chapter boards.

At NENA’s membership meeting held at NENA 2016 in June, Board Attorney, John Kelly, provided the below points that one should consider when forming an opinion on the issue of placing limits on the number of years an individual can serve on the NENA national executive board. They are:

For limits on time:
--Involves more members in association governance
--Increases the opportunity to run for office against non-incumbents
--Establishes consistency on the board, as chair officers are currently limited to a four-year term, whereas region directors are not limited
--Provides the opportunity for new and different viewpoints on the mission of NENA and service to the membership
--Reduces complacency among board members who have served several terms

Against limits on time:
--Decreases institutional knowledge and experience gained through long-time service to the association, especially from the regional perspective
--Reduces continuity of contacts between regional directors, chapter leaders, and the membership
--Frustrates those willing to take the steps necessary to get elected and serve their region
--Limits pool of those who are willing and able to hold board positions
--Reduces familiarity with historical chapter issues
