Gaining Transparency to MRI Energy Usage to Facilitate Reducing Power Consumption and Improving Sustainability

More than half of healthcare’s climate footprint comes from energy usage. Radiology is a major contributor to this footprint and costs due to energy-intensive equipment like Magnetic Resonance Imaging devices (MRIs). Over 65% of the power used by an MRI occurs when it is not scanning, and radiology teams typically have no understanding of the power consumption of the MRIs. Researchers estimate that we could reduce MRI power usage by more than 25% through simple, implementable actions. The capability exists to provide this transparency to help reduce power consumption. These capabilities can help provide transparency regarding potential issues with MRI chillers, allowing teams to take action to reduce downtime. This session will describe how you can leverage technology to provide transparency.

Learning Objectives

  • Understanding the impact of radiology on power consumption in healthcare
  • Learn about opportunities that exist for saving power with MRIs
  • Understanding of technologies that are available to analyze and help reduce power consumption
