Like many of you, I love this time of year in New England and I can’t think of a better place to spend a few days in late September than with 400 of my closest friends on Cape Cod!

For the second year in a row, we’re making the Sea Crest Beach Hotel in Falmouth home to NEHRA’s Annual Fall Conference. It promises to be even bigger and better than last year, with high profile keynotes and plenty of time for networking, not to mention our big 30th birthday celebration.

As Board President, it’s important to me that we consistently provide our members with the resources and information they need to be successful in today’s global, dynamic work environment. When I think back over my 30 years in human resources and the business world, I think about two things that have revolutionized our work — technology and the practice of Diversity and Inclusion. D&I, once viewed as a "soft skills" subject, is now considered the path to having a competitive advantage; it’s not just about the right thing to do, but it’s simply the smartest way to run a business.

Years ago, the topic of D&I was focused primarily on race and gender. Today, the D&I landscape has grown to cover the vast array of lifestyle choices, cultural background, sexual orientation, age, disabilities, in addition to gender and race and more. This comprehensive outlook takes on a holistic approach tied to the HCM concept and its importance in driving a highly-engaged, results-driven workforce.

The Annual Conference this year aims to push your thinking. Whether it’s the latest on performance management or how to build a D&I strategy, we hope you learn something that you can use to make an impact on your organization. The conference isn’t going to be all work, however — we’ve included some opportunities for personal development as well. Whether it’s a session on mindfulness, beachside yoga or reiki, I hope you’ll take advantage of the opportunity to relax and recharge. And last but not least, the NEHRA Annual Conference will provide plenty of time to reconnect with colleagues and meet new people. There is nothing more important to your professional development than a strong network. Whether you’re looking for a new job, need help with a challenging situation or implementing a new program, you can surely find someone who is happy to help.

I look forward to serving as your Board President over the next two years and appreciate your continued engagement in NEHRA.

Cheers,

Ed Hurley-Wales

VP of Market Diversity, ADP
