An estimated 12% of all humans who have ever lived are alive today. This slice of humanity has more life choices available to it than any previous generation. But by concentrating exclusively on the big picture, we miss an even more important story in the tremendous regional variation in unemployment. (The Atlantic)

Career
With millions of people looking for employment, the workplace these days is an increasingly unhealthy environment for those who still have, and are trying to keep, their jobs. Most job search advice is offered by so-called 'experts' who aren't actually responsible for hiring anyone. But hiring managers at major employers are on the front lines of the job market crisis. They screen thousands of applicants a week and are in a unique position to reveal what job seekers are doing wrong, and what candidates can do to get hired now, even in an ultra-competitive job market. International
In dark days, people naturally seek glimmers of hope. So it was that financial markets, long battered by the ever-worsening euro crisis, rallied early this week amid speculation that Europe’s leaders had been bullied by the rest of the world into at last putting together a "big plan" to save the single currency. The U.S. may be in an unemployment crisis, but the students at Harvard Business School aren't too worried about their job prospects, says the school's dean, Nitin Nohria. About 95% of last year's graduating class had job offers by early September, according to the school. (Wall Street Journal)

Even if the MBA degree failed to help a graduate land a job in his or her chosen field, nearly seven out of ten applicants would still apply to an MBA program, a new survey published today (Sept. 27) shows. The study – of both prospective and current MBA students – 867 respondents in June and July of this year – was done by Veritas Prep, the test prep and MBA admissions consulting firm. Some 867 people responded. (Poets & Quants)

Companies have yet another reason not to boost hiring: rising unemployment taxes. Employers around the nation are getting socked with higher state unemployment tax bills as states are forced to shell out more than $1 billion in interest payments this month. (CNN/Money)

Government
The idea of small businesses as indispensable to the national welfare dates to Thomas Jefferson’s veneration of the yeoman farmer. In the popular imagination, small firms are more nimble, more innovative, and more virtuous than blue-chip companies that employ thousands. Yet the notion that small business is the force behind prosperity is not true. (Bloomberg/Businessweek)
