"Past, present and future" was the theme of Friday's luncheon, as members representing each step of the National Black MBA Association’s (NBMBAA) journey stood together on stage to open the luncheon.

Legacy Members – those people instrumental in the formation and early growth of the Association were recognized for their contributions, current chapter leaders and members were thanked for continuing to strengthen and expand the Association, and Leaders of Tomorrow® (LOT) students were challenged to continue finding ways to meet and enhance the Association’s goals in the future.

The 2015 LOT Chairman’s Circle of Excellence members were introduced by Jesse J. Tyson, chief executive officer and president of NBMBAA, and formally inducted as their chapter presidents presented them with the blue blazer that signifies professionalism.

Jamira Burley, a 2007 alumna of the LOT program and a member of the Philadelphia chapter, recognized the commitment of time and energy by the LOT chaperones, mentors, committee members and all others associated with the program.

CAREER
Sylvia Nealy David finalized her participation in this year's National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) annual conference with a Friday morning session titled: "Ascension: Mastering Leadership To Get to the Top."

David said what she most hoped to accomplish by the end of the session was to ensure participants had tangible ideas they could take back and incorporate into their professional lives.

She said one of the most important skills professionals must possess in today's competitive workforce is competency. As managing principal at consulting firm Human Technology Capital Advisors, the word she’s heard used most over the past year is "competency."

"Employers want you to walk in the door competent," David said. "It’s a big deal. You have to be competent."

LEADERSHIP
It only took a minute or two for the audience to laugh and realize that the Friday luncheon program was going to be entertaining and energetic, as well as enlightening.

Blockbuster hit maker and producer Will Packer joined actress Nicole Ari Parker for an informal question and answer conversation focusing on the leadership blocks of his journey to Hollywood.

Parker explained that his responsibilities as an executive producer are to secure financing for a project and put the right team of people in place to make the project successful.

"This is no different than leader responsibilities in any industry," Packer said. "As a leader, I have to put the right people in the right place, then motivate them to follow me and my vision. After all, if you don’t learn how to influence people to help you meet your vision, you won’t be a leader – you’ll be alone."

Attracting sponsors through engagement, taking risks and cultivating purpose-driven relationships are some of the strategies for African-American women to pursue the most powerful corporate jobs.

Panelists shared that advice during Friday’s Black Women: Ready to Lead...Are You Ready session presented by Bank of America, DTCC and EY.

Moderated by Audra Bohannon, Senior Partner at Korn/Ferry, session panelists were Sandra Hurse, Senior Vice President of Campus Recruiting and Program Management, Bank of America; Ehrika G. Gladden, head of Americas Cloud Consumption Models at Cisco; Danica Dilligard, Partner, Assurance Services practice, Ernst & Young; and, Ronald Parker, President and CEO of the Executive Leadership Council.
