The steps to building a better profile are

• Add a photo that presents you as a professional and tells your story. If possible, use a professional photographer. A good photo generates 9 times more connections, 21 times more profile views and 36 times more messages.

• Use titles in your profile that describe what you do rather than generic titles.• Add an industry to your profile to generate 9 times more views.

• Write a compelling summary of at least 40 words that includes keywords for your industry. Wherever possible, quantify results and achievements. This is your opportunity to brag about yourself.

• Provide a detailed description of your work experience. This step will general 8 times more profile views and 10 times more messages.

• Upload examples of your work, videos or presentations.

• Add at least five skills to your profile to increase the likelihood that a recruiter will find you by 27 times. After building a strong profile, extend your reach with thought leadership. Uploading long blogs and short blogs that showcase your expertise or sharing third-party content along with your opinion position you as a thought leader in your field, said Heath.

Final suggestions include using LinkedIn’s learning network to keep building skills and staying in touch with your network.

“Reach out at every stage of your career and after every conference you attend to continue building your network,” suggests James. “Give and request recommendations and endorsements, and post or comment in groups to which you belong.”

By staying in touch with your network consistently, it will be easier to reach out when you need help, ideas or support as you look for another position, she added.
