Why NAWIC Leadership Academy?

As our next cohort of the NAWIC Leadership Academy quickly approaches (get your spot today!), we thought it would be helpful to dive into why the NAWIC Leadership Academy exists and why it’s different from lots of other leadership training out there.

Decades of experience working with women in the construction industry have shown us that despite more women entering the workforce, women still face barriers that prevent them from advancing at the same rate as men.

  • Women Face a Double-Bind:
You’re told you need to be more assertive and confident. When you’re assertive, you’re told you're too bossy, aggressive, or worse.
  • Women Receive Mentorship. Men Receive Sponsorship:
Mentors provide advice and preparation. Sponsors provide exposure and opportunities. Opportunities lead to advancement.
  • Women’s Transformational Leadership Style Isn’t Rewarded:
The construction industry has always been male-dominated and the dominant leadership style of men–transactional leadership–is rewarded. The impact of the transformational leadership style that most women naturally adopt isn’t appreciated, measured, or considered when evaluating women for promotions.

NAWIC recognizes the barriers you face. The NAWIC Leadership Academy is designed to help you embrace your unique leadership style, get the recognition you deserve, and break past those barriers to take on the leadership roles you are made for.
