In 2016, NAFA dipped its toe into the waters of global fleet to gauge interest. Today, many national fleet associations, large fleets, global FMCs, and other organizations want to pursue fleet certification opportunities for their members and employees. Recognizing the groundswell of interest, Bobit Media invited NAFA to be an Association Partner of its recent Global Fleet Conference, with a key part of the event being NAFA’s overview of its certification programs. NAFA also lead a planning session on formulating a global fleet certification program.

What I Learned At I&E

How seriously can cybersecurity affect fleets? One fleet manager had his vehicles hacked and received a demand of $18 million to release them. “How would you react to that?” asked Faye Francy, Executive Director of Auto-ISAC, in Washington, D.C. As deeply competitive as OEMs are, there is at least one area where they are cooperative partners: cybersecurity.

Many of the current and near-future vehicle technologies have significant low- or no-emissions factors to them and/or degrees of autonomous functionality – signaling where fleets will also be headed.  Plus, the pace of change is fast. Yet, fleet professionals gearing up for this new technology should follow three key approaches, according to Bill Van Amburg, Executive Vice President of CALSTART, a nonprofit organization working both nationally and internationally with businesses and governments to develop clean, efficient transportation solutions.  He previewed some of the innovative fleet advancements at the NAFA 2019 Institute & Expo session, Advanced Vehicle Technologies and How You Can Prepare.

Remarketing Strategy

Looking at trends in weekly Manheim Market Report prices, the spring bounce in values ended in April, and May saw steady and slightly lower than normal depreciation each week. Three-year-old vehicle values in aggregate saw a decline of 1.3% for the month, which matched last year’s performance. Prices in aggregate are now lower than the beginning of the year, but non-luxury prices remain higher as a result of their strong spring bounce. Luxury vehicle prices, which have seen abnormally high depreciation this year, saw declining depreciation in May.
