In late-March NAFA announced that the National Property Management Association (NPMA) and the Canadian Association of Fleet Supervisors (CAFS) joined the ever-growing list of organizations partnering with the Association. NAFA’s agreement with NPMA calls for the associations to collaborate on educational endeavors and mutually support each others' individual certification programs. NAFA’s agreement with CAFS gives Canadian fleet managers access to NAFA’s CAFM® program while providing NAFA exclusive endorsement of the program.

A U.S. jury found General Motors liable on March 30 for a defective ignition switch that prompted the recall of millions of vehicles, but declined to award any damages to two people who said they were injured in a car accident caused by the defect.

Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft and the Dutch company Fleet Investments B.V. achieved closing on the sale of leasing and fleet management company LeasePlan Corporation N.V. to a consortium of investors. The total value of the transaction amounts to about EUR 3.7 billion (roughly $4,130,199,000,000).

The FBI and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said researchers have identified vulnerabilities in cars made as recently as the 2014 model year that highlight a troubling trend in auto cybersecurity, citing a report that was conducted in 2015.

Zoox Inc., a relatively unknown startup with the goal of building fully autonomous vehicles, was granted permission by California to test self-driving cars on public roads in the state. This marks the 12th company to receive such a permit.

In response to the number of vehicle recalls, technical service bulletins, and complaints continuing to set records each year, J.D. Power developed a new application to help auto industry professionals analyze vehicle safety data more efficiently. The company launched an online application that can integrate National Highway Traffic Safety Administration information with their automotive data.

Tesla Motors Founder Elon Musk is intent on making owning one of his electric sedans as easy and mainstream as owning a gasoline-powered vehicle. Musk is so big on the idea that he just gave the green light to expand the company's network of charging stations to 105 in Manhattan by March 31.

Poet Inc., the nation’s first commercial-scale producer of cellulosic ethanol, is shipping the fuel from its plant in Emmetsburg, IA, and could hit full production by the end of 2016. The plant, completed in 2014 with Dutch partner Royal DSM, has shipped tank-car loads of fuel in recent months.

Currently, electric powertrains are limited in the class of vehicles they serve and are primarily limited to the luxury market and high price points. Luxury electric vehicles will eventually have a trickle-down effect, but there are still untapped markets to take advantage of in the electric vehicle segment.

Volkswagen and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have been working under a judge's deadline to come to an agreement on a fix for the company's diesel emission issues. That deadline was March 24, but it has now been extended until April 21. But there is a catch: If both parties cannot come to an agreement in the next month, the issue may go to trial.
