The Chicago Chapter kicked off the holiday season in style on December 2 by hosting the annual Toys for Tots benefit at Maggiano’s in Schaumburg, IL. Chapter Chair Diane Lopez welcomed over 70 Members, Affiliates, and guests to this meeting which has become a Chapter tradition.

British Columbia signed a global pledge which aims to have all new zero-emission vehicles on highways and city streets by 2050. B.C. is now the 14th member of the International Zero-Emission Vehicle Alliance as the Minister of Environment, Mary Polak, signed an agreement in Paris during the United Nations Climate Change talks in December, 2015.

BMW has been fined up to $40 million for a recall involving late-model Mini Cooper vehicles, according to a statement posted by NHTSA. The agency opened an investigation in September. BMW has admitted it violated the law by not informing NHTSA of a defect within five days, filing quarterly Early Warning Reporting data late, not notifying owners of the defect, and taking too long to file recall-related information.

Ford Motor Co. on December 22 issued three safety recalls and one safety compliance recall for roughly 317,000 vehicles. The biggest recall covers 313,000 Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis (2003-05 model year) vehicles over an issue with a lighting control module. Because of the involvement of the Crown Victoria, this information might be of specific interest to law enforcement fleets.

Federal regulators say a faulty airbag inflator appears to have caused the death of a young driver, the ninth fatality so far linked to a system provided by Japanese supplier Takata. The announcement by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) came as Honda announced the latest in a series of recalls involving vehicles equipped with Takata airbags.

UPS is making strides to power its Jackson, MS fleet with renewable natural gas (RNG), which will come from landfill waste. Currently, UPS is using liquified natural gas to fuel its large tractor-trailers. To ramp up its efforts, in 2014 UPS built a natural gas fueling station for liquified natural gas in Jackson, MS. There's also a fueling station in Memphis so trucks can go from "hub to hub."

The measure, Senate Bill 1451, would raise Tennessee's registration fee by $75 for hybrids and $150 for electric vehicles. State Senator Mark Green says drivers of all-electric vehicles should pay more because they don't use gasoline.
