NAFA CHAPTER NEWS

It can be very easy to get swept up in the fun and spectacle of the holiday season, and that's a great thing. It's also great to be reminded of those who could really use the help and support, both for now and all year 'round. NAFA's NorCal-Northern Nevada Chapter held their Holiday Luncheon at Ruth Chris Steakhouse in Walnut Creek, CA on December 3. Fifty-three members and guests attended in support of the Bay Area Crisis Nursery with a toy drive and a cash contribution.

An afternoon at the Brazilian steakhouse is not at all a bad way to end the year! And if you add a bit of charitable spirit to the event, it only makes the day that much sweeter. On Tuesday, December 8, NAFA's Mid-America Chapter hosted their annual holiday luncheon at Fogo de Chão, taking in the smells and the tastes, and getting reacquainted with peers.

Wholesale used vehicle prices (on a mix-, mileage-, and seasonally adjusted basis) ticked down in November after increases in each of the previous five months. INDUSTRY NEWS

Low gas prices apparently go hand in hand with consumers buying cars and trucks that drink more fuel. The monthly fuel economy statistics for new U.S. cars continue to drop, with the average miles per gallon rating for new cars purchased in November falling to 25.0 mpg. That's 0.1 mpg lower than the October number, as calculated at UMTRI.

In only 16 months global oil prices have collapsed from over $110 a barrel to less than half that, and the oil industry in the United States and around the world is reeling from its worst crisis since the late 1990s. On December 7, the American benchmark broke the $38-a-barrel mark, a price that makes drilling and completing wells a losing proposition in almost all oil fields around the country.

Pep Boys said on December 9 that it told Bridgestone that the company may ditch an already agreed upon $835 million buyout offer. They declared possible intentions to go with a competing offer from Carl Icahn’s investment firm that is worth $2 million more. Icahn Enterprises is offering $15.50 for each Pep Boys share, compared with Bridgestone’s offer of $15 per share. The buyout from Icahn Enterprises is worth about $837.4 million.

SUSTAINABILITY

The Fleet & Surplus Services Division of Minnesota Department of Administration has successfully demonstrated that a credible sustainability plan is in place, and real, meaningful progress is being made toward reducing their total emissions and the negative environmental impact made by extraneous carbon fuel usage. This fleet joins an ever-growing list of NAFA-accredited fleets that are bringing positive action and quantifiable value to their organizations.

The delegates to the United Nations climate conference in Le Bourget, France, confront a sobering fact: The number of automobiles on the world’s roads is on pace to double — to more than two billion — by the year 2030. And more likely than not, most of those cars will be burning carbon-emitting gasoline or diesel fuels. That’s because much of the expansion will be propelled by the rise of the consumer class in industrializing parts of the globe, especially in China and India, as hundreds of millions of new drivers discover the glory of the open road.

The heavy smog shrouding Beijing has proved to be a boon for China's nascent electric car market, with some dealers saying inquiries about all-electric models are up by almost a tenth. Beijing issued a first 3-day pollution "red alert" on December 7, and set out measures to combat the hazardous smog, including limiting the use of conventional petrol-powered and hybrid cars to alternate days.
