ARI®
THE FIRST WORD

Our hearts and minds are with our brothers and sisters in Paris. We understand all too well the pain and suffering you are living through. We also know that strength, determination, and perseverance — as well as love — will conquer and win out, as good always prevails. Do not lose heart. Be strong. And know that we are all praying for you and standing strong behind you.

INDUSTRY NEWS

The automaker has said some gasoline cars -- not just the diesels that have so far been the focus of investigations -- had worse-than-reported emissions, sending its stock down. VW’s supervisory board issued a sharply worded statement saying it was "deeply concerned." Volkswagen also took steps to retain customers by offering a $1,000 in gift cards and vouchers. However, the "TDI Goodwill Program" will not be made available to commercial fleets.

Even as the supplier faces the prospect of new recalls, Takata could be in for a fine of as much as $200 million if it doesn’t follow up on demands laid out in a consent decree with NHTSA. The company, whose faulty airbag inflators have been blamed for at least eight deaths and 98 injuries, will face an immediate $70 million in penalties. It will then be watched by an independent monitor and, if it doesn’t live up to several conditions – including a speed-up in its recall process – it could face another $130 million in deferred penalties.

In 2002, Honda was the first automaker to begin a retail initiative of hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles when it started leasing its original FCX hatch to fleet customers, and by 2005 it was already leasing the cars to individuals. Three years later the FCX Clarity sedan was launched and to this day there are roughly two dozen of them on American roads.

Royal Dutch Shell said its $70 billion acquisition of the BG Group would allow it to realize $3.5 billion in savings, shed $30 billion in uncompetitive assets, and expand its operations in the fast-growing liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry. Although the British-based BG is only a midsize oil company, it is a major player in LNG, which is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to other fossil fuels.

NAFA’s individual certificates of completion offer education that is targeted to individual fleet disciplines. Fleet professionals can enroll in only the courses of study they require for their work situation. Enrolling in as many or as few programs as they need gives the student empowerment with regard to the time they spend in study. NAFA’s certificate program also helps develop advanced fleet knowledge should the student decide to pursue the separate Certified Automotive Fleet Management (CAFM®) designation later.

SUSTAINABILITY

As automakers continue electrifying their vehicle fleets, one West Michigan company has already started identifying uses for lithium-ion batteries after they’re no longer suitable for automotive applications. Since the cost of repurposed lithium-ion batteries is roughly a third of what the technology sells for new, the batteries should become popular among entrepreneurs as well as homeowners who may use them as an energy storage option.

The European Commission has said that its data shows a range of currently produced Euro 6 diesel models now exceed NOx limits by four to five times in real-world driving conditions, without the trickery. The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), a group of 15 manufacturers that have significant operations in the EU, released a statement noting that the move will bring some serious economic implications because, "as a direct consequence, a substantial number of diesel models will have to be phased out earlier than planned."

Shrinking profits in ethanol are the culprit behind a downturn at Archer Daniels Midland, beginning shortly after CEO Juan Luciano took charge of the giant agricultural processor in January 2015. Revenue and net income are falling, and ADM missed Wall Street's earnings estimates in the last two quarters. Its stock price plummeted seven percent on November 3 when third-quarter profit came in ten cents a share short of forecasts.
