THE FIRST WORD

"For more than a decade, NAFA had been touting its 'strength in diversity' mantra. We as an association are stronger, better, and more equipped for the future than any other organization or entity precisely because of our diversity -- from corporate fleets to government fleets, law enforcement fleets to university fleets, and everything in between. Large fleets and small fleets. Centralized and de-centralized. Local and national. Leased and owned. Sedans, trucks, vans, semis, off-road equipment, and just about anything else with a motor and wheels. They all have a home at NAFA."

NAFA’s individual certificates of completion offer education that is targeted to individual fleet disciplines. Fleet professionals can enroll in only the courses of study they require for their work situation. Enrolling in as many or as few programs as they need gives the student empowerment with regard to the time they spend in study. NAFA’s certificate program also helps develop advanced fleet knowledge should the student decide to pursue the separate Certified Automotive Fleet Management (CAFM®) designation later.

"We set out to eliminate the excuses of people from blaming government, oil companies, automakers and, ultimately, their ancestors for the lack of sustainable transportation," Rathwell says of the cross-country charging network. NAFA MEMBER SPOTLIGHTS

David said earning his CAFM® certification was a goal he insisted upon meeting before he retired. At September's Canadian CAFM® Boot Camp, that's exactly what he did. How he did it, on the other hand, was unique. Only two people have passed all eight of the fleet modules that comprise the program in a single setting. While that was not to be for David, he did the next best thing: he passed half of the tests before the Boot Camp began, and passed the other half afterward.

Ignition switch and airbag problems have been responsible for some of the biggest recalls of the past year – and they’re now being blamed for a pair of new recalls at General Motors. In both cases, however, the problems are different from those that have led to earlier big recalls. Volkswagen almost inevitably will have to compensate owners of diesel cars equipped with emissions-rigging software. Some legal experts say the automaker could be forced to buy back the cars altogether. Many of the more than 200 lawsuits filed in the past few weeks allege that for seven years VW marketed four-cylinder diesel Golfs, Jettas, Beetles, and Passats as clean alternatives to gas engines, knowing all along that the cars were spewing pollution that far exceeded legal limits.

Green Car Journal recently announced the finalists for its 2016 Green Car of the Year award. No diesels made the cut, but it’s not all hybrids, either: The gas-powered Honda Civic and Hyundai Sonata are in the running. Over the course of the last 10 years, corn ethanol has been lauded as being a bridge fuel solution that could reduce air pollution and increase national energy security in the U.S., and production of corn ethanol has gone from 4 billion gallons per year in 2005 to some 14.3 billion gallons per year in 2014. But corn ethanol hasn’t lived up to its promise as being a cleaner and more environmentally friendly fuel choice.
