NAFA ASSOCIATION NEWS

If you always wanted to help shape the future of the fleet industry and be on the NAFA Board of Trustees, now is your chance to throw your proverbial hat in the proverbial ring. Each year around this time, NAFA seeks candidates for each seat on the Board of Trustees. Here is a brief summary of duties and required qualifications for each position, paraphrased from NAFA’s official "Policy for Nomination and Election of National Officers and Elected Trustees" and NAFA’s bylaws.

NAFA’s individual certificates of completion offer education that is targeted to individual fleet disciplines. Fleet professionals can enroll in only the courses of study they require for their work situation. Enrolling in as many or as few programs as they need gives the student empowerment with regard to the time they spend in study. NAFA’s certificate program also helps develop advanced fleet knowledge should the student decide to pursue the separate Certified Automotive Fleet Management (CAFM®) designation later.

The Invoice Bundling Option -- a once-yearly process -- returns for 2016 and can reduce paperwork, clarify accounting, and can free your collective membership with NAFA from inconsistent dues-cycles. In order to participate in the bundling, you must take action now. This will be the only time for the 2016 renewal year that your company can elect to participate in this option. Your opportunity to take advantage of this concludes this Friday, September 25.

In British Columbia, the City of Victoria, and the district of Saanich have jointly purchased electric vehicles in order to benefit from the government’s rebates. On the other coast of the country, the Quebec Electric Circuit has reached 5,000 members. The joint purchase of the two municipalities has allowed them to buy nine vehicles overall and save $3,000 per vehicle.

REMARKETING STRATEGY WITH THOMAS WEBB

"The stability of wholesale pricing, in the face of rising volumes, stands in stark – and welcome – contrast to the volatility in financial markets. It should not, however, come as a surprise. The reverberations of international events will not be felt in the used vehicle market unless and until actual fissures develop in our domestic economy. Such a reversal of fortune is a definite possibility, but it would likely require an additional buffering by those outside forces as well as policy mistakes on our part."

Fiat Chrysler is recalling nearly 8,000 extra Jeeps in the U.S. to patch a security flaw that could allow hackers to remotely control the vehicles. The company is also recalling over 1.5 million pickup trucks to fix a series of airbag problems, including one that could cause the vehicles’ side-impact airbags to inflate inadvertently even when there’s been no crash.

The nation’s largest automotive dealer network has announced it will no longer sell either new or used vehicles subject to a recall until they have been repaired. The announcement by AutoNation comes as the number of safety-related recalls has been surging to record levels. But while the U.S. Senate recently passed a measure that would force rental companies to pull recalled vehicles out of their fleets pending repairs, dealers were not required to take similar actions before selling such vehicles. The House has yet to take action on its own version of the bill.

In a major setback for environmental advocates in California, Governor Jerry Brown and Senate Democrats abandoned a 50 percent cut in petroleum use by 2030 that was a centerpiece of emissions legislation, blaming an intense campaign against the mandate by the oil industry.

Tesla and Toyota are two of the top makers of electric cars today, and while Toyota was the first one in the car industry to intentionally work on electric cars to combine perfection and practicality, Tesla was the first one to make electric cars look hot and luxurious. Already around since the early 2000s, the newest model of Toyota's Prius will be launched this November. Meanwhile, the Model-S 70D, the most affordable car of Tesla Motors today, lists much higher specs than the Prius.

The 2016 version of the Nissan Leaf will now be able to travel an estimated 107 miles between charges, a 27 percent increase over the original version of the battery-electric vehicle. The Japanese maker is taking advantage of improvements in lithium-ion technology to squeeze a 30 kilowatt-hour battery into the 2016 model. Until now, the Nissan Leaf had used a 24 kWh pack. Nissan now claims to offer "best-in-class" range, and the numbers are better than such competitors as the Ford Focus EV that get less than 100 miles per charge.
