THE FIRST WORD

"I'm going to come right out and say it: change is hard. Change comes fast and, very often, change comes without warning. When you work with an association as close-knit as NAFA can be, changes of relationships can temporarily knock you off balance, like a bike rider caught in the slipstream of a large vehicle passing you by. It is unsettling. Fortunately -- and quite intentionally -- NAFA has a specific mission."

After teasing — and then withdrawing — a concept fuel cell electric vehicle for the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit earlier this year, BMW revealed that it really will have fuel cell vehicles in production by 2020. BMW introduced a "production-ready" hydrogen car on a demo-testing basis back in 2005, but that vehicle burned hydrogen in a combustion engine.

Oil traders are rushing to import ethanol from Brazil for the first time this year after U.S. regulators moved to increase use of advanced biofuel, opening a wide spread in the niche biofuel credits market. The premium for Renewable Identification Number, or RIN, credits tied to "advanced" biofuels - such as Brazil's sugar-based supply - versus corn-based ethanol RINs, soared to its highest in over two years in the two weeks since the Environmental Protection Agency proposed higher-than-expected targets for use of fuels made from vegetable oil and plant waste.

While battery-car sales have been growing at a slower pace than proponents have projected, that still means more than 100,000 new battery packs will be put on the road in the U.S. this year. What to do with them when those vehicles are ready to be scrapped has become an increasingly big concern.
