Both can be equally problematic, and on November 20, 2014, the Connecticut Chapter looked into two situations that directly affect fleet; one from the outside and one from the inside. And although "enemy" may sound too strong, having safety issues outside as well as inside your car certainly aren't things to strive for.

Several new laws went into effect in the new year which will impact drivers across the country. For example, all California residents, regardless of immigration status, will be eligible to apply for a driver's license after the passage of the Safe and Responsible Driver Act (AB60) in 2013. 1.4 million undocumented Californians will be eligible to apply for licenses under the new law.

GM is recalling 83,572 vehicles between the years 2011-2012, motors include Cadillac Escalade, Escalade EXT, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Avalanche, Sierra HD, Yukon, Yukon XL, Silverado HD, Silverado LD, GMC Sierra LD, Suburban, and Tahoe.

Public attention on auto-safety defects likely means U.S. recalls in 2015 will surpass last year’s record of more than 60 million vehicles, the new head of the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said. Improving the way the agency tracks potential defects and automakers recall cars will be a top priority, NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind told reporters in Washington on January 7. Regulators have to make sure safety problems get fixed, he said.

Operating by data-driven fleet management standards could generate financial gains of more than $1 million for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, according to an interim report. ODNR manages a massive, statewide fleet of 1,600 vehicles. Each of the agency’s divisions (Parks, Wildlife, Forestry, etc.) maintains its own fleet, but works with the Office of General Services, Fleet Management to develop annual fleet plans.

NAFA was saddened to learn that longtime Affiliate and Club NAFA member Gino R. Francescangeli Jr. died on January 5. He passed away at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital with his family by his side. He was 61.

The Nissan Leaf's total sales in the U.S. for 2014 totaled 30,200 last year--a new yearly record for any plug-in electric vehicle in the country. Since it first went on sale in December 2010, a total of 72,322 Leafs has been sold in the States.

The Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle will go on sale in the U.S. by mid-2015. Toyota officials announced during a news conference at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in early-January that they will give free access to nearly 6,000 different patents covering advanced fuel cell technology to the company’s competitors.
