Ford Motor Co. said on November 4 that it was recalling 202,241 vehicles in five North American campaigns covering several issues, including an incorrect repair in a previous recall. The automaker said it was aware of one accident in the case of the improperly repaired vehicles, but no injuries related to any of the issues. The order includes the Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis, and Lincoln Town Car vehicles from model years 2005 through 2011.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on November 3 it will examine whether Honda Motor Co Ltd failed to report deaths or injuries involving air bags that are now part of a sweeping federal review. Regulators gave Honda three weeks to answer detailed questions about how it sought and logged accident reports for more than a decade. This order, which includes 34 points, must be answered under oath.

A spokesman for the automaker said it was increasing its outreach to owners through social media and a new call center staffed with 72 employees dedicated to contacting those who have not scheduled repairs. But even owners who requested repairs months ago have been waiting, with dealers managing waiting lists and dozens of drivers writing to federal regulators in recent weeks asking why it was taking so long. Some of them are also raising safety concerns about the drawn-out timetable.

When it comes to deploying plug-in electric cars in municipal fleets, Indianapolis, IN appears to be leading the way. The city announced in late-October that it will replace 425 non-police-pursuit vehicles with electric cars and plug-in hybrids by early 2016, as it works toward a goal of converting the entire fleet to "post-oil technology" by 2025.

On November 3, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced its largest Clean Air Act (CAA) settlement ever in an enforcement action against Hyundai and Kia. EPA alleged that the two automakers inflated the certification of their cars’ greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As a result, the car companies agreed to pay a $100 million penalty, forfeit 4.75 million GHG emission credits, and spend millions of dollars to develop better emission testing procedures to prevent future violations.
