NAFA CHAPTER NEWS

The NorCal-Northern Nevada Chapter had the opportunity to become a defendant on September 18 at the Cattlemen's Restaurant in Livermore, CA. Not actually defendants, mind you, but to put themselves in the position of having to be accountable for their fleets in case of a crash or terrible accident, without actually causing the consequences. This was a part of the presentation, "Liability to Fleets and Measures to Reduce Exposure."

The Tri-State and Great Lakes Chapters held an Annual Fall Educational Seminar on Wednesday, October 8. Over 50 participants attended the full-day seminar. Along with the day's education sessions, members took in a continental breakfast and lunch as well as a reception and dinner the previous evening, for anyone who arrived early. There were plenty of opportunities for networking and inter-chapter conversation.

INDUSTRY NEWS

On October 7, General Motors Co. announced its 76th recall of 2014, calling back 7,600 police vehicles because they could roll away when drivers thought they were in park. The Detroit automaker said it is recalling the 2011-13 Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicles because they don't meet federal interlock rules. The vehicles are equipped with a law enforcement-specific transmission selector lever and assembly that contains two pins that could become displaced.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on October 6 it is considering imposing vehicle electronic requirements and asked major automakers to consider if voluntary standards for vehicle electronics make sense. NHTSA said in a notice it was updating automakers on its "progress on examining the need for safety standards" for passenger cars — something Congress required it to do in a 2012 law.

Two new studies have found that voice-activated smartphones and dashboard infotainment systems may be making the distracted-driving problem worse instead of better. The systems let drivers do things like tune the radio, send a text message, or make a phone call while keeping their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel. However, many of these systems are so error-prone or complex that they require more concentration from drivers rather than less.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the Model S cars that are rolling off the line today already have the hardware for what he called "autopilot." The features include a long-range radar, image recognition so the vehicle can "see" things like stop signs and pedestrians, and a 360-degree ultrasonic sonar. The car can park itself in a garage, turn on the air conditioning in advance of a trip, and recognize obstacles on the road. He cautioned, however, that "autopilot" was not fully autonomous driving and would not allow a driver to fall asleep at the wheel.

SUSTAINABILITY

In late-September, researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory announced a new tool for analyzing the economic impacts of building new compressed natural gas fueling stations. Called JOBS NG, the tool is freely available to the public. Mostly made up of methane, compressed natural gas is an alternative fuel for cars and trucks that can offer greenhouse gas benefits over gasoline.

Facing growing concerns about air quality, global warming, and long-term energy supplies, European regulators have begun to debate the possibility of sharply tightening already-strict vehicles emissions standards – but senior automotive executives gathered for this year’s Paris Motor Show are warning such a move could be "fatal" for the auto industry.
