NAFA Stresses Importance of Access to Vehicle Data, House Committee Releases Draft Data Privacy Bill

The Chair of the House Energy and Commerce’s Consumer Protection Subcommittee Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) released a draft privacy bill, which she has been working on jointly with the Subcommittee’s Ranking Member, Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA). The bill is similar to the proposal from Senate Commerce Committee Ranking Member Maria Cantwell’s (D-WA) Consumer Online Privacy Rights Act (COPRA). The legislation would establish limits on sharing consumers’ information and would allow users to correct their personal data. Employers will likely need to take additional steps to comply with provisions included in a federal privacy standard, as many are already working to comply with California’s privacy law, the CCPA, which is effective as of January 1, 2020. The goal in Congress continues to be to establish a national standard for data privacy, which they will continue to work on throughout 2020.
