Launched during the 2019 Institute & Expo this past April, NAFA's Communities have been setting the pace for membership networking and interaction. Each NAFA Community goes deep into a specific aspect and/or segment of fleet.

NAFAConnection spoke with the leader of the Government Community, Nina Hoffert, CAFM®, Fleet Manager, City of Lakewood, Colo.

NAFAConnection: What has the Government Community been most interested in discussing?

Nina Hoffert: The discussions so far range from electric vehicles to fuel management systems to technicians.

What are the top values Government Community fleet professionals enjoy by participating?

Soliciting the ideas of other public sector fleet managers. Often these managers not only manage fleet procurement, but also the repair operations including technicians and automotive parts.

What can new participants research in Government Communities and key learnings thus far?

Several community members have shared information on ASE certifications; whether certifications are required, and whether their organization provides premium pay for certification completion.

Are there any questions where no one had an answer or opinion? If so, what was it?

No one had a response to a request for previously bid contracts for oil transport tankers.

Do you recall the most interesting solution a Government Communities participant offered?

Elizabeth Cooley, CAFM, of The Virginia Office of Fleet Management reported that her creative solution for parts procurement is a blended process. They outsource the parts procurement and their in-house admin employee pulls parts for the technicians as well as provides auditing and parts ordering services.

How are Associate Members participating? What value will they get by participating?

Associate Members can participate in the Government Community by providing product information and encouraging discussion from community members who have used the product. For instance, there is one post sponsored by XL Fleet with attached flyers for plug-in hybrid Ford pickups.

To Participate in the Government Community – or the 14 other NAFA Communities that focus on specific fleet segments – login at www.NAFA.org and click on the green “COMMUNITIES” button on the homepage.
