It is with deep regret that NAFA Fleet Management Association announces the passing of Don Rappeport at the age of 85. He died peacefully on Friday, April 6, 2012, surrounded by his loved ones. On October 4, 1953, Donald married Joan (nee Ratner). He was the loving father of Nancy Liace and Gary Rappeport; cherished grandfather of Megan Lehmann, Katherine Dudley, and Max and Taylor Rappeport.

Rappeport was a co-founder of Donlen Corporation, an American fleet leasing and management company headquartered in Northbrook, IL, a suburb of Chicago. Donlen Corporation was founded in 1965 by Rappeport and Leonard Vine, and he served as CEO until he retired in 2001.

In 2008, Rappeport was recognized for his significant contributions to the fleet leasing and management industry with his induction into the Automotive Fleet Hall of Fame. He remained actively involved with Donlen as Chairman of the Board until 2011. With offices throughout the U.S. and Canada, the company provides consultation, maintenance, and outsourcing for corporate vehicle fleets. Donlen currently has over 150,000 vehicles under management with over 250 employees.

A lifelong Illinois resident, after graduating from Lakeview High School, Rappeport enlisted in the Navy where he served in World War II and was stationed at the USS Kimball. He was a graduate from the University of Illinois.

Over the years, Rappeport supported many organizations including Glenbrook Hospital, American Cancer Foundation, American Diabetes Association, and the Jewish United Fund.

In an article published by Automotive Fleet Magazine in 1990, former employee Joan Sinsky said of Rappeport: "Don worked long hours, but it was important for him to keep Sunday open for his family. One prospect really pushed Don to the limit. Don knew the prospect had time during the week, yet the man kept saying he was busy, every day but Sunday. Finally, after weeks of frustration, Don managed to get a meeting - it was on a Sunday. The prospect deliberately tested Don. He wanted to know if Donlen cared as much about its business as he did about his. We got the business, thanks to Don's willingness to meet the customer's needs."

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The American Diabetes Association via www.diabetes.org or by mailing checks to PO Box 11454, Alexandria, VA, 22312.
