It is with sadness we announce the passing of C. Lance Koenig, husband of Kay Koenig, a long time Member of NAFA and the Tri-State Chapter. Koenig, 72, of Shelbyville passed away Thursday, March 8, 2012, at Ashford Place Health Campus, Shelbyville, IN.

Koenig was a former Auditor of the state of Indiana, retiring in March of 2006, and a member of First Christian Church, where he was active in the Christian Mens Fellowship. He also was a member of Kiwanis and Blue River Walking Club and helped establish the Key Club at Shelbyville High School.

Born October 4, 1939, in Washington, IN, he was the son of Russell Bruce and Clara Louise (Pieper) Koenig. He married Kay Crafton on February 15, 1976. Lance had been ill for some time, but they were able to travel a great deal since her retirement. He enjoyed traveling, gardening, and his grandchildren.

Survivors include his sons, Randy J. Koenig of Sandborn and Scott Furgeson of Shelbyville; daughters, Rita Dale of Sandborn and Lora Furgeson of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Jonathan Koenig, Madison Koenig, Justin Dale, Leslie Dale, Del Denney, Mary Alice Furgeson, and Elizabeth Furgeson; great-granddaughter, Chloe Denney; sister-in-law, Jane Koenig; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Many of the Tri-State Chapter's members know Lance's wife Kay and have worked with her in her various roles in the Chapter and when she was National Affiliate Chair. Shortly before her retirement Kay’s name was submitted by the Tri-State Chapter and she received the National Outstanding NAFA Member award. She was employed by Sandman Brothers Auto where she sold fleet vehicles and was a pioneer for women in the automotive and fleet profession.

The entire membership of NAFA Fleet Management Association offers sincerest condolences to Kay Koenig for her loss. Kay would appreciate hearing from her fleet associates, and messages can be forwarded to Kay using the Freeman Family Funeral Home website .
