Michigan residents faced their fears, and the cold, for the fifth annual Area 5 Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge on Saturday, February 25 at Chippewa Lake. Among them was Derek Lampen, a sophomore at Ferris State University, who is enrolled in the Heavy Equipment Technology program.

"(Derek) actually represented the Ferris Fleet Management Student Organization when he did the Polar Plunge. This is a Register Student organization at Ferris," said Instructor Gary Maike, Ferris State University Associate Professor. "The students are interested in Fleet Management as a career choice and are student members of NAFA."

"Derek has a Class A CDL and works driving trucks when he isn't in school. He has a real passion for all things that are associated with large trucks," Maike said. "Derek is a hard working student and is quick to lend a hand or volunteer to help out."

NAFA is especially proud of Derek's commitment to Special Olympics (and tolerance of freezing cold water) and is pleased to count him among our up-and-coming future fleet professionals.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Special Olympics of Michigan. Special thanks to Gary Maike for passing this information along to us!
