Zipcar has announced a new partnership with the City of Boston for the launching of FleetHub, a new fleet sharing program. Under the deal, several of the city’s fleet vehicles will be fitted with the proprietary car sharing technology offered by Zipcar for use by city workers. The program is designed to help the city improve efficiency, save money, modernize its fleet, and promote sustainability without sacrificing the mobility of its employees.

Zipcar has 9,000 vehicles across several major metropolitan and college areas and over 650,000 members throughout the U.S., Canada, and U.K. Residents and businesses who want an alternative to owning a car are able to rent the vehicles by the hour or day.

The City of Boston has combined vehicles that were dedicated to different departments to create an interdepartmental fleet under the FleetHub program. By deploying the company's car-sharing network platform and implementing its self-service online secure vehicle access and reservation system, the City should be able to reduce costs and gain new efficiencies. In addition to this, the City will be able to get rid of older, under-utilized vehicles due to the focus on fleet sustainability and modernization – helping to support efforts to upgrade the fleet with hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles.

The City of Boston chose the company to provide its fleet technology through a competitive bidding process. Initially, the program will be launched as a pilot for six months. If it’s successful, the City plans to expand the technology to more vehicles. By utilizing this, the City will be able to configure and design its fleet footprint in real time, manage hundreds of activities, analyze diagnostic and usage data, and utilize the analytics provided by the company to stay in control of its fleet and ahead of issues.

By utilizing the technology, the City should be able to reduce the fiscal and environmental impacts of operating dedicated departmental fleets.
