Running from February 6 – March 1, 2012, NAFA’s Risk Management 101 is a four-week, eight-session webinar course offered online (via live webinar sessions) to help enhance today’s busy fleet professional's decision-making and planning skills. This course, the second such offering by NAFA following the Professional Development webinar series success, will set you on the path to pass the risk management exam.

The instructor for this course is Lieutenant-Colonel (retired) Katherine Vigneau, CAFM, NAFA Professional Development Strategist.

If you are enrolled in the certification programs, this webinar series is designed with you in mind, and if you’re planning on taking the written Risk Management exam in 2012, this course is perfect for your needs.

This webinar demonstrates the varying strategies of dealing with risk by focusing on insurance, subrogation, training, and safety in addition to how to effectively handle a loss.

RM 1: Fundamentals of Risk Management (February 6 and 9)
Risk Management is the process whereby risks are identified, analyzed, classified, and dealt with.

Learning objectives for this session include:
  • Define risk and understand what causes it
  • Understand the risk management process and be able to use it
  • Understand and use the Risk Management grid to classify risks and determine appropriate treatment strategies
  • Understand the complementary roles of the Risk Manager and Fleet Manager
RM 2: Insurance (February 13 and 16)
Insurance is a system under which individuals, businesses, and other organizations or entities, in exchange for payment of a sum of money (a premium), are guaranteed compensation for losses resulting from certain perils under specified conditions.

Learning objectives for this session include:
  • Define the principles and key terms associated with automotive insurance
  • Explain and describe the use of insurance policies in the United States
  • Explain and describe the use of insurance policies in Canada
  • Understand and demonstrate the use of an insurance cost/benefit analysis
  • Explain the term subrogation and how it applies in recovering costs in the case of vehicle crashes
RM 3: Fleet Driver Training and Vehicle Safety (February 20 and 23)
Fleet driver training and vehicle safety are a means of preventing employee and property losses to an organization through training and education.

Learning objectives for this session include:
  • Outline and describe abilities and aptitudes required of drivers
  • Define and outline the essential subject matter of a driver-training program
  • List and describe elements necessary to develop and implement a fleet safety program
  • Explain and describe commercial driver licensing in the United States
  • Explain and describe commercial driver licensing in Canada
  • Analyze fleet risks and determine loss control strategies
RM 4: Crash Management (February 27 and 1 March 1)
Crash Management is the process of controlling direct and indirect losses incurred during and after vehicle crashes.

Learning objectives for this session include:
  • Define and outline the benefits of crash prevention
  • Explain how crash data should be obtained, organized, and used
  • Develop and outline how crash investigations should be handled
  • Describe and identify the roles and composition of a crash review committee
  • Describe when vehicles should be repaired or replaced following a crash
  • Explain and outline the importance of maintaining an on-going system to track and investigate driver's records in the United States
  • Explain and outline the importance of maintaining an on-going system to track and investigate driver's records in Canada
