NAFA Webinar – CAFM/CAFS Business Management: Register Today!

NAFA's Certification Board is pleased to announce a Business Management webinar scheduled for Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at 12:00 p.m. (EST).

Regulations and legislation both govern fleet managers' relationships within their organization as well as their interaction with various external parties.  Dealing with leasing companies, automobile dealers, supply or service contractors, and insurance companies all require knowledge of an organization's rights, boundaries, and responsibilities.  Without such knowledge, severe consequences can result.  As a cornerstone of overall fleet management, this module's competencies will cover a diverse array of practical and commonly encountered topics.

The webinar is designed for Certified Automotive Fleet Manager (CAFM) and Certified Automotive Fleet Specialist (CAFS) candidates, as well as others interested in improving their knowledge of business management. This webinar is presented by the NAFA Certification Board and not part of the free webinar series for Members; see registration information below.

The Business Management webinar will cover the following competencies and respective learning objectives:

BM2: Business Law

Business law is the body of law, which governs business and commerce and is often considered to be a branch of civil law and deals both with issues of private law and public law.  Business law governs contracts, hiring practices, the manufacture and sale of consumer goods, business transactions, and work safety.

Learning Objectives:

  • To define and explain the essential elements of contact law, such as communication, acceptance, breaches, and consideration.
  • To define and explain the essentials of tort law and the duty of care.
  • To define and explain the provisions of bailment.
  • To define and explain agency relationships, and identify an agent, principal, and agency agreement.
BM3: Fleet Policies and Procedures

Fleet policies and procedures are the written documentation of executive level management decisions that employees are required to follow in conducting the business of the organization and usage of its fleet vehicles.

Learning Objectives:
  •     To perform policy writing and procedure development.
BM6: Request for Proposals

A request for proposal is the instrument used to solicit proposals and/or offers for proposed contracts using the negotiated procurement method to obtain goods and services.

Learning Objectives:
  •     To define and explain the critical components of a successful RFP.
  •     To describe techniques for evaluating and selecting a service provider.

SPEAKERS

Katherine Vigneau, CAFM, held various positions in logistics and transportation in the Canadian Army for the past 27 years.  From 1998 to 2001 she held the post of Fleet Manager for the Department of National Defence, responsible for policy oversight and management of a fleet of 32,000 vehicles.  Most recently, Katherine served four years as the Logistics Section Chief at the Joint Warfare Centre in Stavanger, Norway.  Katherine completed her CAFM in 1999, master's of Business Administration Degree in 2003 and master's of Defence Studies in 2006.  She has worked on various NAFA projects, and served on the Certification Board as well as NAFA's Board of Trustees.  Katherine was awarded NAFA's Excellence in Education Award in 2010.  Since retirement Katherine has been working as a consultant with KMVS Fleet + Consulting and is presently the Professional Development Strategist for NAFA.

Christopher Lyon, CAFM, has more than eight years of experience in the government sector of automotive technology and fleet maintenance.  He completed his CAFM in the new program in 2009 and completed a bachelor's degree in Business Management in 2005.  Chris has been a member of NAFA's Certification Board since 2010 and a speaker at CAFM Boot Camps and Advanced Fleet Management Seminars.  He is also a member of the Steering Committee for the Chicago Area Clean Cities and Illinois Partners for Clean Air.
