Centralizing A Decentralized Municipal Fleet

Print Print this Article | Send to Colleague

Many government jurisdictions have cities and counties have more than one fleet management organization. This usually takes the form of a general fleet organization and one or more department-specific fleet organizations (such as police or fire). In this session we will explore the reasons that fleet management can be decentralized, the pros and cons of centralization, and the types of centralization that can be pursued (such as organizational, policy, etc.). Case studies from various jurisdictions will be discussed and the reasons why some municipalities have centralized fleet and others have not will be explored.

Those in attendance for "Centralizing a Decentralized Municipal Fleet" on Wednesday, April 20  will learn the organizational theory behind centralization (economies of scale, authority structures, and governance models) as well as factors that lead some municipalities to centralize fleet while others do not. You will also hear different case studies where centralization has been successful, and discuss topics like success factors, best practices, financial results, and service level impacts.
