Mentor Café - Inspiring Future Leaders One Human Connection at a Time

In April 2015, MPI Toronto hosted a NEW free-for-members initiative called Mentor Café: 16 Mentors and 30 Mentees were brought together to meet in a speed dating style platform directly following National Meetings Industry Day.

Mentoring provides a learning opportunity for both parties involved. A tremendous opportunity was created to inspire emerging leaders by sharing personal journeys from many of the industry’s greatest leaders including: Les Selby,CMP, CMM, Helen Van Dongen, CMP, CMM, Alice Parnis, Bill Garrett, Cynthia Richards, Bettyanne Sherrer, CMP, Catherine Paull, CMP, Trevor Lui, Shelley Williams, Sheila Wong, Patricia Brusha, Lynne Gale, CMM, Leandra Ruttan, CMP, and Danny Dobriansky.

Here is some attendee feedback:

"Having met industry leaders at the Mentor Café and had the opportunity to have a personalized question and answer session has enlightened me to different aspects of the industry that I never knew existed. They offered great advice and encouragement on my endeavours. Kudos to MPI who envisioned and implemented this initiative. I feel proud to be associated with MPI ... true leaders and planners extraordinaire!" ~ Mentee

"As a mentor, it is a privilege to be asked to be a part of what I think should be an MPI Toronto Chapter annual event. Our experiences coming from different parts of the industry are invaluable to those who want to understand more or decide on a career path. Why pave it all the way yourself when this type of program is available to you. On the flip side, I learn from the mentees. I learn to understand what it is that they in turn are looking for and what their experiences have been. Usually it is a different generation that I’m speaking with and therefore also learning about that generation helps me understand to plan the events I do. And I too have also found new supplier contacts." ~ Mentor

Plans are in motion to bring the Mentor Café back following NMID 2016. If you are interested in participating as a volunteer, mentor or mentee, please contact Leslie Wright at lwright@mpitoronto.org.

Be bold – stand out – give back to yourself by being an example to future leaders or by spending a bit of time with current ones. Your future successes await you.
