(MP)2 – Welcome to the Power of Mentorship!

Why does Mentoring Matter? Mentoring applies to everybody, in every stage of life, in any profession. Mentoring not only benefits the mentee who is looking to building their skills, industry experience and knowledge, it also benefits the mentor, by discovering new trends, ideas and opportunities. Mentoring has contributed to many people’s successes in industries across the board, both professionally and personally. This is why the MPI Toronto Chapter has made it a part of their strategic initiative to develop the mentoring program. It is an opportunity for people who want to be mentored, and for the mentor it is an opportunity in developing a protégée’s leadership skills.

Starting with a four-month commitment, the program will allow both parties to develop their leadership skills through regular meetings at least once per month. The mentor and mentee will have the opportunity to discuss how frequently they would like to meet, and what they would like to gain from the experience. Through developing ground rules, it will assist in sustaining an effective mentoring relationship by identifying clear expectations.

It is important to know that this program is designed to be a learning experience for both individuals. It’s about learning from each other – no matter how much experience someone has in the industry, they always have something to teach and to learn!

Benefits for the Mentee

For mentee’s, the benefits include expansion of their knowledge of leadership skills, management practices, ethics, etiquette, and industry practices. They gain the opportunity to discuss their goals and aspirations with a trusted advisor who will provide honest, constructive feedback, as well as ongoing support and encouragement. Mentors provide mentees with an increased depth of professional experience in the leadership arena.

For mentors, the benefits are of a more personal nature. Mentoring provides the mentor with the opportunity to reflect on his or her skills and practices. Working with a mentee also exposes the mentor to new ideas and opportunities for learning and continuous improvement. Finally, there is a personal satisfaction in teaching and sharing one’s experiences.
