Not all disabilities are visible, and for millions of people worldwide, navigating public spaces with an invisible condition can be a daily challenge. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Network is changing that by offering a simple yet effective way to help individuals signal that they may need extra assistance, time, or understanding. The Fredericton Convention Centre is proud to announce that it has recently joined this growing global initiative.

The Origins of the Sunflower Network
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Network was launched in 2016 at London’s Gatwick Airport. The idea was simple: create a discreet yet recognizable way for individuals with non-visible disabilities to signal their need for support without having to explain themselves repeatedly.

Since its inception, the program has expanded rapidly across multiple industries, including travel, hospitality, retail, and event venues. Airports, convention centers, and businesses around the world now recognize the Sunflower symbol, ensuring that staff are trained to provide thoughtful and respectful assistance when needed.

The Prevalence of Hidden Disabilities
According to the World Health Organization, over one billion people worldwide live with a disability. While disabilities can take many forms, studies suggest that around 80% of them are non-visible. This includes conditions such as autism, chronic pain, hearing or visual impairments, mental health disorders, and neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis or epilepsy. Because these disabilities are not immediately apparent, individuals can often face misunderstandings or a lack of support in public settings.

Why a Sunflower?
Without a visual cue, it can be difficult for others to identify, acknowledge, or understand the daily barriers faced by people living with an invisible disability.

This is a discreet sign that is clearly visible from a distance as well as being distinctive, joyful, and dynamic. A sunflower suggests happiness, positivity, strength as well as growth and confidence, and is universally known. A bright sunflower on a green background, featured on lanyards, badges, and wristbands can be picked up at Sunflower Network-certified locations by those who can benefit from a little extra help, time, or patience due to their hidden disabilities.

What It Means to Be a Certified Sunflower Location
Fredericton International Airport (YFC) joined the Sunflower Network in 2024, inspiring Fredericton Convention Centre to become certified as well. By becoming a certified Sunflower Network venue, the Fredericton Convention Centre has committed to fostering an inclusive environment for all attendees. Certification means that staff members have been trained to recognize the Sunflower symbol and respond appropriately—whether that means offering additional assistance, allowing extra time for tasks, or simply demonstrating patience and understanding.

For event planners and attendees alike, this certification signals that the space they’re in is one where accessibility and inclusion are priorities—a safe space. They invite other venues to join the network, helping to build a broader array of spaces where individuals with hidden disabilities feel seen, respected, and supported.

Together, we can make our spaces more inclusive, welcoming, and accessible for everyone.
