On Tuesday, Sept. 21, MPISCC met up virtually via Zoom to discuss the latest read in our book club, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab. This time around we opted for a lighter genre in this fantasy fiction novel. The group was intimate with approximately 12 registrants, but the conversation was engaging and exciting.

If you haven’t checked out this book, you should! In the novel, we meet a young woman who makes the dark and difficult bargain of trading her soul for the ability to live forever. The story follows Addie LaRue on her journey over time and throughout several locations as she experiences life, but with one catch – no one she meets can remember her.

Educate

Over the next several months, the You Belong Committee will be sharing what we call "The DEI Minute" — which is quick hits of information and content designed to help our chapter level-set our collective diversity, equity and inclusion knowledge. We'll start by providing the definitions of the most commonly used terminology in the space as the starting point of our journey as we embark on true learning and awareness — together!

Diversity

Diversity goes far beyond black and white. And instead of having such a narrow and limited view, diversity should be viewed as the representation of our varied differences, collectively and as individuals, based on aspects of our identities, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual identity, disability, class, age, country of origin, citizenship status, education, religion, geography and also the diversity of thought.

We are all diverse in some way, shape or form. And as a chapter, our objective is to view our unique differences not as obstacles but as our strength.
