MPI So Cal Connect

MPI Southern California Chapter

Events

Last month, MPISCC hosted its annual State of the Industry live on Zoom. I remember attending this event in Downtown LA last year with high hopes for the year ahead. Of course, 2020 was not the year any of us expected, so this year’s event focused on how to navigate the post-COVID event landscape as we move into the new year.

Though this year’s event was virtual, attendees were still able to connect with each other – many “hellos” were flying between industry friends in the Zoom chat. Plus, we were able to enter our burning questions for presenters into the chat and get live answers.

This year, the Lunar New Year began on Feb. 12 and will be observed by more than 1.5 billion people. Commonly associated as Chinese New Year or Spring Festival, the Lunar New Year marks the first new moon of the calendars traditional to East Asian countries, including China, South Korea, Singapore and Vietnam.

In China, the 15-day celebration typically begins with a family feast and concludes with the Lantern Festival. Fortune, happiness and health are resonant themes, and traditional festivities include lion and dragon dances, red envelopes filled with money and firecrackers.

When I’m not celebrating the Lunar New Year with my family in the Bay Area, I usually host a 10-course Chinese banquet with close friends at a restaurant in the San Gabriel Valley. Unfortunately, that has changed due to the pandemic this year as we keep gatherings more intimate, but we’ll be honoring the Year of the Ox nonetheless.

Gong hei fat choy! Read on to see how other MPISCC members will be celebrating differently this year.

Last month, MPISCC recognized Natalie Wong, co-chair of the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee, and Karly Watson, chair of the MPISCC SoCal Connect Newsletter, as winners of the Quarterly Volunteer Impact Award for their contribution to the chapter. We chatted with both members to get to know them a little better and get a window into their lives.

With last summer’s racial strife and, more recently, the headline-hoarding rise of white supremacy groups and hate crimes, I suspect conversations about race are occurring within families around dinner tables as they have been for years. But today, these conversations are coming out into the open within the workplace and around boardroom tables.

And these exchanges are quite often very raw and very real.
