Stay Sharp While Staying Home. By Heather Mason, CEO and Founder of Caspian Agency

So, besides work and email, what can we do with that extra time? We know events will eventually be back, and when they are, we want to be ready. Time to sharpen the skills. While self-care needs to be at the top of the list, and visiting with friends and family (at a safe distance of course), what comes after that? Plenty.

Let’s start with contracts. There are plenty of new clauses to add regarding force majeure, pandemics, cancellation and postponement, of course. But what about thinking of unique items to add—like an MOU that ties cashflow of ticket sales to deposit payments? Maybe benefits for those who sign up first regardless of whether it is a virtual event or an in-person event? There are webinars and online groups (thank you, MPI message board) with rich discussion about what can be done to mitigate and plan for the new normal. It’s time to jump in and be part of the crowdsourced solutions. More brains are smarter than one, and our community (and you) will be better for it.

Next, how about tracking international trends? Some countries will come back sooner, some later, some much later. This will impact all of us. The world has gotten smaller, and I would doubt anyone can truly operate in a U.S.-only environment or mentality in 2020. It's time to research and then forecast what might happen to your events as they start to come back online. This will position you well with your clients (or boss) as you start talking about not just a few weeks or months down the road, but looking toward years. This is the type of thinking they are counting on us for—and if they’re not, they’ll be pleasantly surprised. It positions us as a valued consultant and irreplaceable employee going forward.

In that same vein, how about languages? At Caspian, we work internationally and are constantly working to refine our cultural knowledge, but it always helps to be able to communicate in a native language. Even a few words or phrases here or there can go a long way in diplomatic (and contractual) relations as we navigate the new normal. Now is the time for a hobby that can translate into real value down the road.

And of course, increasing our skill sets as producers is an ongoing need. We at Caspian have the 10 Essentials and our online training course, but there are a plethora out there, which can cover everything from neuroscience in convenings, to strong facilitation, to hybrid events, VR, AR, drones and more. What I love about our field is it's always expanding and encompasses any number of sectors.

If you’re like me, you’re never bored. So let’s not start now. We have the gift and opportunity to sharpen our skills just by staying home. See you online!
