Event Recap: Diversity Dialogue: A Conversation on Inclusion by Chrissy Thompson

Moderated by business development executive from Monterey County Convention & Visitors Bureau and beloved MPI member Joe Marcy, the session took the form of questions and answers asked out to the audience. Admittedly, this highly engaging and, at times, emotional conversation brought our perspectives to new levels.

Here’s what we are still thinking about today:

Inclusivity is bigger than race
Creating an inclusive environment means being aware of the many dimensions of diversity, like gender, religion, race, marital status, ethnicity, age, education, physical and mental ability, income, sexual orientation and so much more. Open and transparent conversations across all fronts are necessary to break down discriminatory narratives.

Diverse companies are more successful
Vice president of human resources at ALHI, Suzanne McKay, shared that 57% of people want to work in more inclusive and diverse environments, and 80% of millennials report being more productive when they do. Interestingly enough, productivity levels drop down to 60% when people find themselves in homogeneous settings. It appears that organizations that learn how to embrace diversity initiatives more openly produce better outcomes — both culturally and financially.

Lastly, be an ally
Being an ally means being empathetic. It means listening to other people’s experiences and taking time to self-educate. Whenever possible, we as a community must amplify minority voices and encourage dialogue and conversation exactly how the MPI Southern California Chapter has set out to do with this new initiative.

Once again, thank you for this wonderful opportunity to participate in a larger conversation. We have walked away with much more than we could have ever imagined. We look forward to the next Diversity Dialogue and all of the new perspectives it will bring.

P.S. — Congratulations to the MPI Southern California Chapter for being nominated for not one, but FIVE, MPI Global RISE Awards this year!
