This season brings several exciting moments for our community—from celebrating Pride Month and Juneteenth, to gathering at MPI’s World Education Congress (WEC), to recognizing our dedicated volunteers and networking with purpose. 🌈 Celebrating Pride Month New York City offers a multitude of Pride events throughout the month, culminating in the iconic NYC Pride March on Sunday, June 29, starting at 12:00 PM from 25th Street and Fifth Avenue and proceeding to 16th Street and Seventh Avenue. This vibrant parade features over 700 floats and is a testament to the city's commitment to LGBTQ+ rights and visibility. After decades of shorter agendas dominating the calendar, we’re finally seeing a return to the four-day meeting - and it's a welcome shift. At Kalahari Resorts & Conventions, we’re hosting more programs that prioritize depth over brevity, allowing for meaningful content, stronger team connections, and lasting ROI. This trend reflects something deeper: a renewed value placed on in-person engagement. With hybrid fatigue settling in, planners are realizing that more time together often translates to more impact. Longer meetings give space for both strategy and serendipity - structured sessions and organic connection. When attendees aren't rushing out after a single night, relationships have room to grow. For sales and convention professionals, this resurgence requires us to adapt and elevate. Now is the time to refine full-experience programming: think wellness breaks, flexible F&B formats, and integrated entertainment that complements - not competes with - meeting goals. It's also a moment to reemphasize destination value. Properties that offer everything under one roof, like Kalahari, can help planners extend stays without blowing budgets. The ask from clients has shifted from “Can you host us?” to “How can you help us make this time count?” We must be both partner and strategist - helping craft agendas that justify the added time by delivering greater outcomes. Let’s welcome this evolution and rise to the occasion. The four-day meeting is more than back - it's better. " I, Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, by virtue of the power in me vested as Commander-in-Chief, of the Army and Navy of the United States…
… do order and declare that all persons held as slaves within said designated States, and parts of States, are, and henceforward shall be free. ... [S]uch persons of suitable condition, will be received into the armed service of the United States. ... And upon this act, sincerely believed to be an act of justice, warranted by the Constitution, upon military necessity, I invoke the considerate judgment of mankind, and the gracious favor of Almighty God." It took until June 19, 1865, for word of this proclamation to reach as far south as Texas. This was 900 days after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect, 71 days after Robert E. Lee surrendered to the Union, and 24 days after the disbanding of the Confederate military department covering Texas on May 26, 1865. It wasn’t until December 6, 1865 that the 13th Amendment was ratified making slavery and involuntary servitude unconstitutional, "except as a punishment for a crime" June Nineteenth soon became known as Freedom Day or “Juneteenth” and was celebrated annually with religious services, speeches, parades, educational events, family gatherings, and festivals with music, dancing, and food. On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed legislation to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. Modern celebrations continue, varying from family to family as well as regionally and now often include a performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” the unofficial Black American national anthem.
