MHI Updates

MHI recently launched a blog that concentrates on material handling ergonomics and safety. The EASE and ProGMA Industry Groups of MHI collaborated on the creation of this new informational and news resource for manufacturing and supply chain professionals. The MHI Material Handling Safety Blog will feature regular updates from industry experts on the latest trends and technologies in this space.
On a regular basis throughout the year, MHI releases videos as part of its MHIview platform. MHIview is an innovative video approach to education that illustrates and informs on the latest and emerging trends in the material handling and supply chain industry. These are the top eight videos of 2019.
Material handling is an essential part of supply chains around the world and is a vital part of our growing digital economy. This is why MHI worked with Oxford Economics to produce the first-ever Economic Impact Report. MHI commissioned this report with Oxford Economics to quantify the economic impact that this vital industry has across all industries and regions of the United States. That impact in 2018 amounted to more than $173.2 billion in GDP, as well as $39.3 billion in taxes to local, state and federal governments.
A soil classification is assigned to a location based on the characteristics of the types of soils present, including the ability of the soil to withstand the weight of the structures built on it. Therefore, it’s important to have this information available for a rack design engineer, as the soil classification contributes to the overall geological and seismic risk determination.

Transportation

The 2019 holiday season saw a record number of people anxiously waiting for their last packages to arrive before Christmas. Very few have an appreciation for just how amazing today’s fulfillment and delivery systems operate. According to MHI’s Freight by the Numbers infographic, 49.3 million tons of freight moves through the U.S. transportation system each day and customers are expecting shorter delivery time on their packages. In a comparison of last-mile carrier share of Amazon.com packages, the average number of delivery days decreased from 5.5 days in 2016- 2017 to 3.9 days in 2018-2019.
To truly understand e-commerce’s impact on supply chains, follow the movement of goods through the middle mile, e.g. from port to warehouse/DC, between warehouse and from warehouse to e-commerce storage areas.
By its very definition, intermodal is a web of deeply connected functions. As one part is impacted, it often creates a ripple effect. Heading into 2020, though, intermodal trends have the added complexity of outside forces creating a lot of volatility.
