Recently, the Protective Guarding Manufacturers Association (ProGMA) created two videos: “Pick Module Safety” and “Vertical Reciprocating Conveyor (VRC) Safety.” Both videos have received praise from across the industry.
MHI recently launched a blog that concentrates on overhead lifting solutions. The MHI Overhead Alliance, comprised of members of CMAA, MMA and HMI affiliated trade associations of MHI collaborated and created this new informational and news resource for manufacturing and supply chain professionals.

A loading dock that’s tailored for your unique business can be a huge contributor to your productivity, but choosing the wrong equipment can result in a loading dock that is a major bottleneck and safety hazard. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 25% of industrial accidents occur at the loading dock. It is critical that operators utilize equipment that ensures safety and accessibility. There are a variety of loading dock accessories with features that make communication easier, conserve energy and enhance safety.
As a safeguard against the industrial steel storage rack falling down, anchor bolts are used to secure column base plates to the facility floor. Critical to the structural integrity of the rack, the anchors prevent the rack uprights from sliding out of position should they be impacted, as well as a measure to prevent the system from tipping.
The Conveyors and Sortation Systems (CSS) Industry Group of MHI has released a follow up document to their popular “Introduction to Conveyors and Sortation Systems.” The second publication in their educational series is titled, “Handling Applications with Conveyor and Sortation Systems," and provides an overview of the different possible functional applications of conveyors and sortation systems within warehouses and distribution centers.
Overhead hoists are used in manufacturing and warehousing facilities to lift, lower, handle and move loads. For safe operation, regular hoist inspections are critical. Unfortunately, some companies wait until there is an accident before they recognize the importance of committing to a hoist inspection program.
Technology and Innovation
There’s a reason the phrase “no pain, no gain” is such an enduring cliché. All too often, if you want to make something easier or better in the future, you may have to endure some major inconveniences in the present. That’s definitely true in the ever-evolving material handling industry, where buyers of new systems and technology and the suppliers who serve them must work together to minimize the disruption to existing operations while implementing major changes. In fact, managing that difficult transitional period when the old meets the new was recently identified as one of the top barriers to implementing new technologies.
Workforce
The rise in e-commerce has customers expecting more from the supply chain industry. To meet these expectations, organizations must continue to adapt and leverage digital solutions to transform your business. Having the right people in your organization can help you integrate new technologies and complete a digital business transformation.
The labor market as a whole is changing, but even more dramatically in the logistics industry. Qualified labor is getting harder to find, while a significant percentage of the existing workforce — baby boomers — will be leaving the workforce over the next 10 to 15 years. For the first time, there is actually an inversion in the marketplace, meaning that there are now more jobs available than people available to fill them across the entire economy and particularly in this industry.
