If you’re an employer planning on hiring management expertise in the future, grooming top talent and meeting this industry’s best and brightest future leaders – or if you are a student looking for a bright and rewarding future within the mechanical contracting industry – you must attend the second annual MCA Student Chapter Summit, scheduled for February 26 to 28 at the University of Waterloo.

Students from McMaster University and Algonquin College will join their hosts from the University of Waterloo for sessions on "A Day in the Life of a Mechanical Contractor", "Interview Skills and Tips", "Innovations in Modular Construction", "Interface Management, An Emerging Project Management Discipline", "3D Laser Scanning" and "Location Sensing in Construction".

Afterwards, students will visit the UA 527 training facility where they will have the opportunity to work hands-on with the tools of the mechanical trade and participate in a technology symposium where they will have an opportunity to learn and to try various technology tools that are currently being developed to assist with the future of the construction industry.

CEC would like to thank MCA Ontario, MCA Kitchener-Waterloo, MCA Canada, MCA Hamilton, Shell, Aecon, UA 527 and Trimble for their sponsorship of this event. Without their support, this opportunity would not be possible.

Industry News
When a piece of equipment is bought outright, you take on ownership, meaning the equipment becomes an asset on your balance sheet. Standard company balance sheets have three parts: assets, liabilities and ownership equity. The difference between the assets and the liabilities is known as equity, or the net worth of the company. From a taxation perspective, the benefits of ownership allow the company to depreciate the asset. But if the purchase happens near the end of the financial year, the tax savings become minimized because the full year’s depreciation can’t be taken. A preferred method of handling the transaction is an operating lease.

Given the pipeline of projects, 2015 could end up being remembered as the year of public-private partnerships. Short lists are being completed for large and expensive projects in many provinces. There’s $8 billion up for grabs in Toronto via the Eglinton-Crosstown light rapid transit; potentially $5 billion that’s set to be awarded for the construction of a new Champlain Bridge in Montreal; and another $2 billion for an LRT system in Edmonton. As well, some projects will come from provinces relatively new to the world of P3s.

The New Leader’s Council and Virtuali have published a report called Engaging Millennials through Leadership Development: Teaching Millennials to lead is the key to talent acquisition, employee engagement and retention.

The report is based on a sample of 527 U.S.-based Millennial professionals. It underscores the impact that changes in the workplace, in which we will see a growth of 30 percent or more of Millennials, who will become the majority of workers. The report notes that 50 percent of Millennials are already in leadership positions. Yet, 64 percent of those surveyed felt "unprepared" when assuming their leadership roles and report difficulties managing people and resolving conflicts.

Innovation and Technology
The 2014 Construction Technology Report, conducted by JBKnowledge, recently investigated how more than 1,000 contractors are using, funding and implementing information technology (IT).

What does this imply for contractors, their IT departments, and their IT users (i.e., employees)? While the availability, functionality and affordability of IT is consistently improving, attitudes toward IT spending are not.

Microsoft revealed a version of Windows that blends holograms with real world video to provide users with an augmented reality version of their environment that blends real objects with virtual, and virtual interface elements, information boxes and guidelines viewable via a wearable headset device. Windows Holographic provides ways for engineers to see instructions overlaid directly on the objects they’re working on, Microsoft said on stage, or offers a way for architects to survey and present their designs alongside clients even when separated by great distances.

As you know, Operation Eyesight and MCA Canada have partnered together to help eradicate blindness caused by trachoma, a completely curable disease.

Since 1963, Operation Eyesight has prevented more than 35 million people from facing the tragedy of needless blindness. The most heart-wrenching fact about trachoma is that it can be eradicated with accessible clean water and basic sanitation, something near and dear to our hearts.
