Industry News
Changes were announced to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. While these changes should have a minimal impact on the construction sector, for those employers using low-wage TFWs, caps will now apply. For example, if the TFW will be paid less than the prevailing median wage of the province, they will be categorized as a low-wage TFW. For these employers, a cap limiting TFW use to no more than 10 per cent of the total employer's workforce will apply. While this is disappointing, most employers should be unaffected. Furthermore, for high-wage and high-demand TFWs, the processing of their applications should now take on average no more than 10 business days. Click here for a summary of the changes.
Canada’s Anti-Spam Law (CASL), coming into force July 1, affects most businesses sending any e-mails, text messages or messages through social media. But according to a survey conducted by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), only 15% of its members are fully aware of CASL’s requirements, and most (62%) have taken no steps to comply.

Education and Training
Canada's construction industry will need to rely on skilled temporary foreign workers to tackle the current demand but it needs to start training to capacity, says the head of the Canadian Building Trades. In the last 10 years, Canada's Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) program has tripled in size. The TFW program is not so temporary anymore, citing instances where workers are still working under the program after eight years, the maximum amount of time through the program.
