The design-build model is growing in popularity. This project delivery method, which presents both opportunities and challenges in the industry, is on track to account for $1.19 trillion in construction spending through 2021. A growing number of companies are using the design-build model, both private and public owners are looking at it as a viable option, and support for legislation around this model continues to increase.

A deal has been reached to lift the steel and aluminum tariffs on imports from the United States and Mexico after negotiations with officials from those countries. But the removal of tariffs does not guarantee that U.S. Congress will approve the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement this year.

In the next three decades, 2.5 billion people will move to cities, according to global forecasts. Tibor Turi, vice-chair of the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers, says this is a reason government needs to take smart city technology seriously, including the use of the Internet of Things.

The lean project delivery approach is already here, and is not just a part of the industry's future, according to Art Winslow, who delivered a presentation called "Apply Lean. Boost Productivity. Add Value." at the Vancouver Regional Construction Association’s Construction Leadership Forum in Whistler, B.C. in early May.

According to Statistics Canada's latest Labour Force Survey, the construction industry now employes 1.465 million workers. Between March and April, the industry created 29,200 new jobs, seasonally adjusted, which increased the construction workforce by two per cent.
