Canadian construction starts increased by 20 percent last year, according to ConstructConnect. Large projects in the transportation and industrial sectors contributed to more than 80 percent growth in the non-residential sector. In civil engineering construction, a large bridge project supported growth of 10.1 percent. There are signs that work to cool the housing sector may be starting to bite, with residential construction starts dropping by 14.8 percent.

Drones can play a major role in inspecting and monitoring the state of infrastructure worldwide, according to a report from the Lulea University of Technology in Sweden. These drone inspections can be performed faster and safer than when humans inspect dams, wind turbines and other types of infrastructure, researchers said.
