On the occasion of the Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic Technologies (MEET) trade show, the Associate Member Council of MCA Canada hosted its biannual meeting on May 19.
As a result of the good representation from the suppliers in attendance, the meeting was extremely positive and came out with several exceptional initiatives. The associates have created a new Membership Committee to examine the current supplier database, examine the value proposition and develop a plan of action over the next 12 to 24 months. In addition they reviewed many new marketing options including a new service training database for the MSCC website, the CEC Golf tournament, webinars, in-class training sponsorships, a new searchable database, and inclusion of the associates listed in the MCA Canada smartphone app. Several recommendations were also brought forward with regards to upcoming conferences.
Stay tuned as these initiatives go live.

It is with heavy hearts that we share news of the passing of long-time MCA BC member Bernard Reid of Universal Supply.
Bernie was the founder of Vancouver’s Universal Supply. He was also founder and first chairman of CIPH BC Region. Bernie joined the CIPH board in June 1968 serving faithfully and with distinction until June 1986. He was awarded the CIPH Outstanding Service Award in 1993, an honourary life membership in 1995 and a 50-year service plaque in 1997.
Our thoughts and prayers go to the Reed family in this difficult time.

Staying up to date with your tax obligations is an important part of managing your business. The quickest and easiest way for your business to pay a debt to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is to pay online.
If applicable, the CRA charges interest at the prescribed rate, compounded daily, on a tax debt until it is paid in full. This means that the sooner you take action, the less interest you’ll have to pay. For information on payment methods, go to make a payment.
If your business cannot pay what it owes in full and on time, contact the CRA as soon as you can. Ignoring a debt does not make it go away. The CRA’s collections webpage and video for businesses tells you:
- where to go to pay a debt to the CRA
- how to set up a payment arrangement if you can’t pay
- what happens if your business doesn’t work with the CRA to resolve a debt
Businesses that don’t pay in full and on time, or that don’t work with the CRA to resolve their debt, can be subject to legal and financial consequences. Visit the CRA’s collections webpage at cra.gc.ca/collections, and watch the CRA video called " Keeping Your Business on Track."

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) is proposing an Introduction to Canada Visa that provides a pathway to permanent residency for workers in entry-level categories. That was the central message delivered in a presentation to the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities.

Construction app guru Rob McKinney said one of the reasons for the industry's lack of productivity is the fact that construction today has an "inherently combative nature" compared to the early days of the industry. The functions of architects and contractors were originally combined into one design house until "about 100 years ago."
