The National Trade Contractors Coalition of Canada (NTCCC) held the 2016 Prompt Payment Summit from April 17–20 in Ottawa, following in the footsteps of the successful summit held in 2015. The event engaged trade contractor associations and observers from across the country to discuss the urgent need for federal prompt payment legislation and to discuss the progress that has been made provincially.

As a self-employed individual, you and your spouse or common-law partner have until midnight on June 15 to file your 2015 income tax and benefit returns. Any balance owing for 2015 must be paid by April 30. However, as this date is a Saturday, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will consider your payment to be made on time if the CRA receives your submission or it is postmarked by midnight on May 2. A late-filing penalty on amounts owing may apply to returns received after the June 15 deadline.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) offers taxpayers a second chance to correct earlier mistakes and put their tax affairs in order through the Voluntary Disclosures Program (VDP). If you have ever made a mistake on your taxes, or left out details about income you reported on your tax return the CRA is offering you a second chance to make things right.

If you are an employer who provides your employees with a short-term disability plan and your plan meets certain requirements, you may be entitled to pay your Employment Insurance (EI) premiums at a rate that is lower than the standard employer rate of 1.4 times the employees’ EI premiums.
