February 6 & 7 - MCA Canada’s Strategic Planning Committee met in Ottawa and spent two full days strategizing the future of the National Association culminating in a "draft" of a Strategic Plan. This plan is to be presented to the national Board of Directors for their consideration when they next meet in March 2016.
Planning Committee composition included representation from MCA Canada’s Executive Committee, Service Contractors, Provincial and Zone MCA Managers, Associate Members, Past Chairman, our Education Council and MCA Canada staff. Committee discussions included those relating to key result areas and strategic objectives including membership recruitment, member engagement, external relationships, government relations, management education, and also included organizational development and addressed the national conference. Once again, MCA Canada will be providing its support, through sponsorship, to the 2016 edition of the Skills Canada National Competition, which will be held in Moncton, New Brunswick, at the Moncton Coliseum from June 5- June 8, 2016. This annual competition organized through Skills/Competencies Canada (SCC) is the only national, trade and technology competition for students and apprentices in the country. Young people are given the opportunity to learn about the numerous careers that exist in the skill trade and technology sectors, including those related to construction. Every year, over 500 young people from all regions of Canada participate in over 40 skilled trade and technology contests. These events are usually attended by over 2000 competitors, trainers, partners, educators, youth, parents, government officials, and other stakeholders. MCA Canada has been a proud supporter of the plumbing portion of the competition for years and is again this year. If you require further information on this year’s competition, contact: Gail Vent, SCC Director, Business Development @1-877-742-5226.

Innovation and Technology
The year of the drone - In the past year, no other technology has shown more potential to impact, and to improve more parts of the construction business than unmanned aircraft, more commonly referred to as drones. There are the obvious applications, such as using the aircraft to grab aerial progress shots, but contractors have figured out how to work drones deeply into their workflow.
By The Numbers
February 08, 2016 - The total value of building permits issued by Canadian municipalities rose 11.3% to $6.9 billion in December, following a 19.9% decline the previous month. Higher construction intentions for multi-family dwellings in Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta explained the advance. Municipalities issued $2.3 billion worth of non-residential building permits in December, up 2.5% over the previous month. This increase followed a 23.2% decline in November. An increase in the value of commercial permits more than offset decreases in the institutional and industrial components.
OTTAWA—The Canadian economy is set to expand by a paltry 1.7 per cent throughout 2016, according to the latest Conference Board of Canada forecasts. The think tank downgraded its Canadian growth outlook Feb. 4, saying it expects the country’s struggles to permeate beyond the energy sector. It pointed to an expected decline in building construction this year as a result of sluggish demand and rising vacancy rates.
