All of us at the Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada extend our sincere congratulations to all the Members of Parliament that were elected or re-elected on October 19. We look forward to working with everyone involved as the new government begins to implement its election platform, and we wish all MPs well as they rise to meet the new challenge before them.
Unable to find candidates with the skills they need, many employers are struggling to fill in-demand positions. According to a new survey from CareerBuilder.ca, half of employers feel there is a shortage of skilled workers in Canada. In an effort to overcome such challenges, many are taking matters into their own hands by training workers on the job.

Did you know that October 18 to 24 was Small Business Week in Canada? Held annually, it is an opportunity to celebrate and recognize the contribution small businesses make in communities across the country. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) understands that small businesses face unique challenges.
Maybe you’ve been in business a long time, and you manage your tax obligations yourself. Maybe you’ve just started out and partnered with a tax professional. Either way, you’ll want to know about these online services for businesses:

  • The "View mail" service lets you view answers to common enquiries and submit account-related enquiries using My Business Account.
  • Representatives can now access the Business Registration Online service directly through Represent a Client at www.cra.gc.ca/representatives.

At its meeting on October 19–20, the Canadian Construction Association’s board of directors passed the following motion:
"That CCA work with its partner associations, interested stakeholders, and federal contracting authorities to educate the federal government on the importance of prompt payment and cash flow on federal construction projects, and work together to resolve any concerns, which may include the enactment of federal prompt payment legislation acceptable to the industry."

This motion was partly in response to a request by the National Trade Contractors’ Coalition (NTCCC) to support its initiative to seek the enactment of federal prompt payment legislation. The motion is also in response to the outcomes generated through consensus at the CCA Industry Summit held September 29 in Toronto.
CCA has published a comprehensive overview article on the issues discussed at the summit.

Download the minutes highlights for more information on this and other items discussed at the CCA board meeting.
Now that the Liberals have secured a majority government, there’s some building to do both inside and outside the walls of Parliament Hill.

Running deficits to fund infrastructure projects was a main plank of the Liberal election campaign.

The drop in gas prices mitigated inflation, yet prices for groceries, restaurant meals and other consumer goods pushed higher.

Bank says the rebound is supported by long-awaited "signs of strength" in non-resource sectors and solid U.S. growth.

MCA Canada's Charity of Choice
If you're reading this, then you're among the fortunate. Many people in the world's poorest countries suffer from blindness caused by trachoma—a completely curable disease.
MCA Canada has partnered with Operation Eyesight, a charitable organization that helps provide people around the world with access to clean water, and eradicate trachoma as a result.
MCA Canada members have graciously donated more than $155,000 to this important cause. The money you have raised has helped the charity drill nearly 30 wells. But there is still more work to be done. You can help by donating.
