Countdown to Federal Election 2015

Today is election day. If you haven't already done so, please go out and vote. This is your opportunity to make a difference in the future of our country.

During the 11-week federal election campaign, MCA Canada has been advising our members to reach out to their local candidates and federal party leaders to explain the importance of prompt payment legislation in our industry. Our efforts are paying off!

We were advised last week of the various stances of the three major federal political parties.

New Democratic Party: "Tom Mulcair and the New Democratic Party favour prompt payment legislation as a means of correcting the unfair payment squeeze contractors all too often find themselves in."

Conservative Party: "We support the great work done at committee and intend to study federal prompt payment legislation."

Liberal Party: "Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of the Canadian economy, but they often face serious barriers to success including, as you identified, delayed payments for services rendered. A Liberal government will help SMEs grow and create an environment that reduces barriers to their success. We are committed to working with the provinces and territories, as well as key stakeholders, to solve the issue of delayed payments to SMEs."

Industry News
Although parents and youth say they believe career opportunities in the skilled trades to be limited, the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum recently published a report that shows the opposite is true.

North America’s construction sector has a terrible record of investing in research and development. In Canada, construction ranks at the bottom of all industries as measured by their R&D expenditures.

That's one of the findings that's being reported in the first draft of Green Building in Canada: Assessing the Economic Impacts and Opportunities, which is being prepared by the Canada Green Building Council.

Technology was the hot topic of the Construction Management Association of America's recent National Conference & Trade Show. Sessions about new innovations and tools, as well as the risks that come with them, dominated the show schedule. Conference experts agreed that change is coming, and construction professionals need to adapt to the ever-evolving industry landscape.

By The Numbers
Investment in non-residential building construction amounted to $12.9 billion in the third quarter, down 0.5 percent from the previous quarter. This was the third consecutive quarterly decline and largely reflected lower spending on the construction of commercial and industrial buildings.

MCA Canada's Charity of Choice
MCA Canada and its charity committee chairman, Brad Diggens, are extremely proud of the generosity demonstrated by our members over the last few years. You have graciously donated more than $155,000 to Operation Eyesight, and the money you have raised has helped the charity drill nearly 30 wells.

As you know, Operation Eyesight and MCA Canada have partnered to help eradicate blindness caused by trachoma—a completely curable disease. With your further support, we can provide people around the world with access to clean water, and wipe out trachoma in the process.

Please consider contributing to this extremely worthwhile charity to save lives. To obtain your copy of the Operation Eyesight Pledge Package, visit mcac.ca, call 613-232-0492 or email mcac@mcac.ca.
